Hand Pounding a Well for the Homestead 4K

What happens here

Once the well pipe is pounded to a sufficient depth and a water vein is reached, it's time to install the pitcher pump. First, attach the pump to the top-most well pipe section, ensuring a tight, sealed connection. Before pumping, it's beneficial to 'prime' the pump by soaking the leather components in water to ensure they seal properly and create suction. Begin pumping vigorously. Initially, the water will likely be muddy or discolored due to disturbed soil. Continue pumping until the water runs clear. Pay attention to the pump's 'kickback' - a strong kickback indicates a good water vein and proper operation, while a weak or absent kickback may suggest issues with depth or air in the line.

Goal: Obtain clean, flowing water from the newly installed well.
