today's project is turning a sloped backyard into a flat backyard oh this is one heck of a hill [Music] i don't know to flatten out this backyard means we're going to need to put in some engineered retaining walls but we don't have a lot of space and there's a lot of obstructions in the way so we call in and bring out our mini equipment although bigger equipment would be nice we don't have the room to sneak it in go over it with him like exactly where the wall is going to go because and then let them know you know price might you know things are going to change if we're adding more than the i'll have to look at my uh if i gave him an updated estimate or not i think it's the same thing and then i should probably give you uh we're doing gray and then i told them to hold off on the pins um because we've got a bunch let's use a lot of ours up yeah i've got a couple bags in the truck still on i think you got a couple still yeah yep and then hopefully they have geo grid and everything on the load i figured the mini x would be enough out there because we're adding dirt not taking in we're not excavating a whole bunch out maybe that lower two blocks buried with the one on the top of that if that's how he's got it then we'll be digging into the hill what is it six feet or something like that yeah i don't know we'll look at it i didn't think we'd need anything because it's not a heck of a lot of excavation you know but if we do need one we'll need it and we'll get it out there we gotta just just gotta get boards for the trailer that's gonna cost more than getting the trailer fixed this year oh that's gonna be a lot of money seriously spent a lot with that trucking trailer so far oh yeah yeah try not to think about that no i mean not like you didn't bring that to my attention the wood prices are very high we need two and a half inch thick wood might as well just go up in the woods and make your own all right good morning everyone so new day new site laying in our own equipment right now all the way up to maple grove it's a sweet 50 minute drive tim always finds those jobs that are like super far away but i i can't complain gotta go where the work is at least i got a job that i like with people i enjoy can't complain too much uh so anyways about this wall everybody keeps telling me that it's gonna be be a doozy just a bear of a wall i haven't seen it yet but apparently it's uh it's gonna be a nine footer i can't remember how long it's gonna be it's gonna be the length of this dude's backyard we're turning a hill into a yard so doing a lot of those lately [Music] so oh river rock gonna pop some egg it's out there get out of there hey get did you get one yeah you did oop but oh no that's a good one it's a little one but yeah that's a pretty decent one a little peeler vera effect and other stuff oh plain here's the backyard holy crap holy crap [Music] you know it's it's wild is that there there's people in this world whose job it is to take care of these holy crap yeah these are going to be some massive roots they didn't plant the tree deep enough and that's when you get all these these surface roots which is you you really don't want that blaine look at this is one big root dude somewhere it's just gonna be one hell of a wall man they're gonna be up a lot higher than the neighbors so what was tim saying we gotta do a radius over here now too on there instead of doing the 90 for the return it'll be a 90 down here it's this corner that because the property goes and then angles oh yeah yeah yep so we can't go straight because we'll hit their property if you go straight from that corner you're coming too far this way yeah they're losing the yard yeah we can't go too far too close to this tree because we're going to be running into a lot of ruts doesn't seem to be the same thing they planted that one too shallow too you see all those surface roots running up there yeah we're gonna start we're going to be hacking roots off of there yeah bringing in a lot of fill it's going to be yeah tim was saying something like 40 40 something trucks you thought it was gonna be like 45. [Music] every year we seem to have a job that we call from hell i remember one year we called it the hole from hell where i was supposed to dig out a basement but then it needed a soil correction and by the time we were done with the soil correction the bottom of the hole was 100 feet across 110 feet the other way across and 38 feet deep to get to the bottom so i could start refilling the hole back up just for a house foundation that was the hole from hell well this is kind of like the stump from hell we got started on what we were hoping would be a stump that we could pop out but found that the roots just kept going you can see one of the main support roots right here as they expose it yeah that's yeah that's it you got the bottom right there and that's the crazy thing is this is one of the small ones yeah you guys probably aren't gonna tell in the video but that's a easy foot across i don't know easy foot down and that's one of the little ones these are all just the surface roots too we're not gonna not getting into the tap root or tap roots or nothing yeah i can't even bug that right now i don't think that yeah them this machine's a little underpowered yeah just locked in yeah that's gonna be gnarly too digging closer up around the stump here that's gonna be yeah i can't big yeah that's gonna be a lot of that's gonna be a lot of hand digging right there gosh this is going to be a video right here pulling stump with the not right equipment hey blake hey tim um yeah i don't know about this stump here yeah it's it's a beast not even budging we've cut almost halfway around it it's just it's a lot of weight there with all the dirt and i mean we could we could keep cutting the little roots back towards the just keep chipping away at it but i don't know how much time you want to waste on this we gotta go like right through it right yeah and i don't know yeah we just don't have them we okay i appreciate it i got a meeting here real quick and then i'll i'll head your way okay sounds good i'll bet you tim comes out here and it says oh we just gotta give her a couple of smacks he's not moving no no no i just put an inground pool and it's already half dug out it's already half dug out yeah they just need to dig that bit good to go yeah we got the got the deep end to the shallow end that sounded like a whole bunch of blocks getting delivered yep it is look at that you want me to move my truck and we just have them pull forward yeah probably the best i'll just move up the dr move up driveway then oh that is a lot of blocks that's not even all of them the blocks we're using on this project are the same that we use on almost everything we install the versa lock standard units these blocks are capable of building walls from two feet tall to 32 feet tall and we've used them to build everything in between but we're finding that there's a shortage of these blocks this year so we're need we need to order these well in advance and this is just one of three shipments coming in this is also one of the very first jobs that we're using the kubota sbl 65 on and it absolutely is a requirement that it can unload and load trucks and so far it's doing pretty well but how is this machine going to tackle that big stump yeah that thing's huge oh i know well look at this here too it's all gonna be one piece until out here you're looking at this all these roots grew together and those are that that's the second worst one right there going under the fence uh he's coming out right now so we can go over things with them yeah i didn't realize this thing was i didn't look at this last time i was here that's where that yeah that's what we were trying to say yesterday was like holy crap i mean it's dug out all the way around there's nothing underneath there and that big one was cut and then i dug all the way over this is this is pretty good i mean i'll work at it a little bit here and see see what i can come up with i'll move this stuff i can go down around i know i've said this to these guys a whole bunch of times but i just worked for an arborist i sent him a picture it's a 1800 stump is that right yeah if we can't get it to budge yeah it's just a beast so we'll go to plan b uh we'll figure something else out yeah that's what we were saying we were saying get your get your coffee can tanner right and let her do its thing they always ask me when i call in gopher state you know like do you guys are you guys using any explosives i always wish to say yes for safety reasons the block that we stored in the street has to come out as soon as possible we just wanted to get the semi out and down the road so it wasn't blocking up the intersection but with that gone the rest of the block gets pulled back to our job site the first thing these guys want to do is start to work on the support routes these are the main structural routes that anchor this log in and they tackle each route one by one using teamwork the mini x doesn't have enough power so tim puts the beak on the kubota up on the hill and uses gravity in our favor grinding the thumb down just won't work in this application because we've got to clear the hill so that we can get geo grid from the new retaining wall that's going to be constructed back into the slope everything has to be tied together now what you can't really see happening here is tim is on the upward side of the hill and he's using gravity the weight of the machine he's got that beak and he's just trying to get any part of his root structure to start to break free piece by piece so not only is he using the power of the machine he's using all of the weight of the machine as well what really makes a tree stump like this challenging is the fact that it's fresh and green those roots are flexible they're going to give and move and spring right back to where we started from versus cracking and breaking like a solid piece of concrete wood yeah many actually working hard close to oh i've seen a couple of you asking what the hours are on our mini x and here it is right here that's all let me know if you're getting too close to the maps okay there's some it looks like there's a couple of big ones right over there down right there you're good go you're good go i'm watching you're good now different trees have different root structures i believe this was probably a maple and it should have a deep set of roots that grow directly below the tree so even though they've got everything cut around the outside there's still a lot of support root left underneath the trunk getting the stump out of the ground is the first step the next step is to get the stump to go into the back of the truck and to also get the stump to leave the back of the truck now we're more than worried that if we get that stuff placed in the back of the truck the way it is that it'll catch on this back tailgate and it won't pop out and something like that can lead to a catastrophic failure catastrophic meaning that if that stump is sliding out catches that tailgate and the gate still continues to go up the additional weight can make the entire truck flip backwards and land on its side so that stump has to be brought down into manageable side bite-sized trunks basically [Music] [Applause] i i think we should just get it i think we should just get it up out of the way and join i can cut it up into some smaller pieces and then we can just get it out like that yeah that's what i mean we can throw it on the dump trailer then and even if you know it's in a couple of bigger yeah and just throw a strap around it yeah that'd work [Music] there's a with the stump finally out of the way the guys can concentrate on the actual job that they were there for and that's to begin building on the retaining wall so in the very next video coming down the pipeline we're going to show you how we crawl down the hill how we start to dig out not just the footing for the actual retaining wall blocks themselves but this retaining wall is going to be engineered with multiple layers of geo grid so we're going to show you how we install those as well what i'd like you to do if you guys are interested in a subject like that is watch the next video and then start to ask the kinds of questions that you want answered because we're going to have a multiple series on this project it's a pretty massive and undertaking we've got 400 yards of dirt coming in a 9 to 11 foot tall retaining wall and this is a great chance for us to show you how we build these bigger projects but i need to know what kind of questions you guys would want answered so do me that favor on the next video coming out if there's anything you guys want to see lay it on me and then in the following video after that i'll be able to start to answer and address your questions while we're still working on this project hope you enjoyed today's video i don't think the guys did they they i got plenty of phone calls and so did tim that that stump was one heck of a doozy uh but when they got through it got it out even without the right equipment we're still able to just struggle through it sometimes that's all you can do is just struggle through it we could have brought a bigger excavator out but unfortunately our trailer had not been completed yet we were in the middle of rebuilding that trailer so for us to pull the debu out or our big excavator out would have meant we had to rent a trailer to do that and finding trailers and finding people right now is very challenging i'm guessing some of you guys are experiencing that as well but i hope you enjoyed this one god bless you guys and i hope i see you on the other one smash that like button and uh just whatever you do i hope that it turns out way better than you ever imagined it could god bless go get em you guys see you on the next one
