Fencing Like A Pro...Knot tying..Pulling wire tight and more!
What happens here
The reef knot (also known as a square knot) is primarily used for joining two pieces of wire that are *not* under tension. To tie a reef knot, create two 'U' shapes in the two wires. Pass the right-hand U under and then over the left-hand U. Then, take the tail of the right-hand U and pass it over the left-hand U's tail and through the loop formed by the left-hand U. Pull both ends tight. When tension is applied with a chain strainer, this knot also tightens down securely. It is effective for splicing wire where tension is not extreme, or where the wire will not be under constant high strain.
Goal: Learn to tie a reef knot for joining wire not under tension.
Tools and materials
- Chain Strainer Strain Right — Applying tension to test the knot
- Crimping Pliers — Crimping the wire ends for a finished knot
- High-Tensile Wire — The wire used to demonstrate the knot
- Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during tensioning tests
