Fast Fireplace Makeover. Rock Fireplace To Weathered Wood.

What happens here

Continue installing the remaining 1x2 furring strips around the fireplace, aiming for a spacing of approximately 12 inches. Apply construction adhesive to the back of each strip before pressing it into place. Where the fireplace is solid block or brick, use masonry nails (specifically 1 1/4 inch fluted masonry nails, like Grip-Rite fasteners) to secure the strips. For areas with existing wood framing, use self-tapping deck screws. Remember to use wood shims as needed to ensure each strip is perfectly aligned and creates a flat, even plane across the entire fireplace surface.

Goal: Create a uniform and stable furring strip grid for paneling.

Tools and materials

  • 1x2 Furring Strips — Building the support grid for the paneling
  • Caulk Gun — Applying construction adhesive
  • Cordless Drill Ryobi — Driving self-tapping screws
  • Hammer — Driving masonry nails
  • Liquid Nails — Adhering furring strips to the fireplace surface
  • Masonry Nails Grip-Rite — Securing furring strips directly to brick or block walls
  • Self-Tapping Deck Screws — Securing furring strips to existing wood studs
  • Wood Shims Cedar — Adjusting the depth of furring strips to create a flat plane

deck screws. So, my first corner furring strip right here, we're going to be attaching on top of these furring strips some thin plywood. And that's what all of our uh eventually our top boards, our decorative boards are going to be attached to that. These furring strips, this is an all uneven surface. So, I'm just on this first corner. It comes down here. Then, there's a gap here. And I'm just going to be using some liquid nails, putting some shims in there, and screwing this so it's nice and sturdy. [Music] And once again, just using some selftapping deck screws to screw right through that. So now now I'm going to just attach these curring strips just about I'm going to do every 12 in down the fireplace and then my paneling will screw right to that. I've got this block wall with just some texture over it right here. So I'm just going to secure these furring strips right here in this area with a concrete nail right here. I just got this secured. I'm just gonna fill it in with liquid nails. Okay, got another corner piece right here. We got a stud. We can screw this one in. Just put some liquid nails on the back right there to help secure it. Then we're going to just screw it in with our deck screws.
