Everything You Need To Know Before Building a Retaining Wall

What happens here

After the first few courses are laid, the area behind the blocks is backfilled with a layer of drain rock, followed by dirt. The drain rock facilitates water drainage, preventing hydrostatic pressure buildup. The earth is then compacted using a plate compactor to ensure stability and prevent future settling. This process is repeated for subsequent courses of blocks, with GeoGrid integrated every two courses for enhanced soil reinforcement. Special attention is paid to creating clean miter joints for corners using a concrete saw to cut blocks precisely.

Goal: Build up the retaining wall tiers with blocks, backfill, and GeoGrid reinforcement.

Tools and materials

  • Concrete Saw Stihl Cutquik TS 420 — Precisely cutting blocks for mitered corners
  • Drain Rock — Backfilling behind blocks to improve drainage
  • Excavator Caterpillar — Placing drain rock and dirt backfill behind the wall
  • GeoGrid — Reinforcing the soil behind the wall every two courses
  • GeoWall Retaining Blocks — Building successive layers of the retaining wall
  • Hearing Protection — Protecting ears from loud machinery noise
  • Plate Compactor Wacker Neuson — Compacting backfill layers to prevent settling
  • Respirator — Protecting lungs from concrete dust
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from debris and dust
  • Shovel — Spreading backfill and fine-tuning placement
