DIY Guide to Everything Retaining Walls w/ Versa-Lok -Including Stairs, design, Construction & more

What happens here

To create a column or pillar, arrange half-split Versa-Lok blocks to form a square. Flip every other course of blocks upside down to hide the grooves, presenting a clean, smooth face on all sides. This creates a visually appealing and congruent column. The interior void space of the column is ideal for running electrical lines for lighting. For structural integrity, always start building from the corners and work outwards, ensuring that each corner has a solid half-unit. This prevents weak points that could arise from trying to fit small, cut pieces into corners later.

Goal: Construct sturdy and aesthetically pleasing columns or pillars.

Tools and materials

  • Construction Adhesive — Gluing each course of blocks for added stability (recommended, though not explicitly shown in video)
  • Gray Block / Chipped Block — Using less aesthetically perfect or cheaper blocks for the unseen backfill areas of the steps
  • Versa-Lok Blocks — Constructing the column or pillar
  • Versa-Lok Lifter Versa-Lok — Lifting and placing blocks efficiently
