DIY Furniture Painting. Painting Household Furniture With Spray Paint Cans.

What happens here

After the green paint on the seat is completely dry, carefully remove the masking paper and tape from the legs. The stool is now fully painted with a two-tone finish. For added durability, especially if the furniture will be used outdoors, consider applying a clear coat like Varathane Spar Urethane. This provides UV and weather protection. Remember that oil-based spray paints create overspray that can travel far and is difficult to remove from hard surfaces; therefore, always paint in an appropriate area or use a large drop cloth extending 10-15 feet around your project.

Goal: Complete the painting project and ensure long-lasting durability.

Tools and materials

  • Drop Cloth — Protecting surrounding surfaces from overspray (if not painting in grass)
  • Painted Stool — The finished furniture piece
  • Varathane Spar Urethane — Applying a clear protective coat for UV and weather resistance, especially for outdoor furniture

There you have it. Now, my stool's all sprayed. Look at it. Just make sure it's all covered. And there you have it. There's my studio chair all done, ready to make movies with. A couple more handy tips when you're actually painting your furniture. And as a professional painter, I'm at a lot of people's houses painting and I do see where people have tried to and attempted to paint furniture or other small projects and they'll just set some cardboard down on their walkway or their deck or something and they don't realize it that the the overspray from these cans, it's oil based and it dries slow and it actually will carry, you know, 10 to 15 feet away from your project. in. So they'll get a line of overspray on their deck or concrete and it doesn't come off cuz it's oil based. Once it lands there and dries, it's pretty much there for good. So make sure I I'm out here in the grass and the grass is going to grow in a couple days. You're going to mow it. So no overspray is really going to matter. So make sure you paint your project someplace where it's the overspray is not going to harm, you know, the surface below. or make sure you use a large droploth cuz you want to have it go extend out like 10 to 15 ft. And one more thing, if your piece of furniture is outdoors, you can add a little bit of durability to it by spraying it with a spar urethane. And a urethane is going to give it some UV protection and some weather protection and it's going to make your furniture last a lot longer if it's outdoors. Even if it's indoors, a clear coat over the top of it is going to make it a little more little bit more durable. And I like using a water-based spar urethane.
