What happens here

The old timber retaining wall is selectively demolished in sections. A reciprocating saw (Milwaukee Super Sawzall) is used to cut timbers embedded in the soil. The excavator with its grapple attachment then carefully removes the cut timber sections. This phased demolition strategy is adopted to avoid obstructing the entire parking lot and to allow for concurrent construction. Excavated soil is loaded into a dump truck using a Volvo skid steer.

Goal: Remove sections of the existing timber wall without fully clearing the site.

Tools and materials

  • Daewoo Excavator — Removing large sections of the timber wall and loading debris
  • Dump Truck — Hauling away demolished timber and excess soil
  • Ear Protection — Protecting hearing from loud machinery and power tools
  • Milwaukee Super Sawzall Milwaukee — Cutting timber sections embedded in the soil
  • Reciprocating Saw Blades — Cutting through wood
  • Volvo Skid Steer — Moving excavated soil and debris
  • Work Gloves — Protecting hands during demolition and material handling

[Music] foreign so we're not tearing out the entire retaining wall from start to finish because we don't want to basically hog up the entire parking lot to do that so we're going to leave some of it in place while we build and then we're going to take out just enough that we can build it back up and then use that material to backfill the other portion of the retaining wall so it's kind of like we're flipping the soil from one side of the site to the other side of the site but when it gets really bad like this stuff we have to haul it out [Music] so we found out that that parking lot has flooding issues every single year that's what we were told at least so all of these things started to come to light after we had completely wrapped up the entire retaining wall and a person came out that i think lived in the association and just started to share with us all of the issues they had they have um they have to drill holes in the parking lot because they get water blisters forming i've never heard of that is that crazy uh the units are flooding someone told us i mean it's just one thing after another on this site that would have been nice if we would have known about it before we got [Music] started [Music] we're running a little behind today because i uh we needed glue and i had to turn around and run back up to my house to get it because i haven't been keeping it in the truck and keep it in my house so it doesn't freeze and get wrecked because that stuff is expensive this is sam's favorite caulking gun i think he'll probably walk you through it but in the corners when we come to our corners you can't always get the pin holes to line up so we heavily glue the corners and we'll show you how we build a corner we actually overlay the corners and overcompensate them [Music] you'll see in the bank some of there's some of the dead men left in there sam is going to do a really good explanation of why that's okay to leave in place he does it as good as anybody i know can do it so we'll just let him talk about that in a little bit that other retaining wall that's above us that will get yanked and hauled out it's just some of those dead men can stay in place [Music] quite a pretty good day today again we got a lot a lot done god site's so muddy you can hear it squish so plan for tomorrow first thing the rest of this upper wall is coming out we need to be six feet back from the front of our blocks for the geo grid we're at like four right now so we got two more feet to go…
