Built this project for my mom, she previously had pretty dangerous wooden steps

What happens here

Begin constructing the structural elements of the steps and any integrated planter boxes using interlocking paver blocks. The video references "Unilock's Rivercrest" blocks, which are designed for retaining walls and steps. Lay the first course of blocks directly on the prepared and compacted base, ensuring they are perfectly level and aligned. Apply a bead of concrete adhesive (e.g., a landscape block adhesive) to the top surface of each block before placing the next course. Stagger the joints of successive courses for maximum strength and a professional appearance. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap blocks into place and ensure proper seating. Cut blocks as needed using a concrete saw for precise fits, particularly at corners or ends.

Goal: Erect the main structural components of the multi-tiered paver steps and integrated planter boxes.

Tools and materials

  • Concrete Saw — Cutting paver blocks for custom fits
  • Dust Mask — Protecting lungs from concrete dust when cutting
  • Hearing Protection — Protecting ears when using power tools like concrete saws
  • Level — Ensuring blocks are perfectly level and plumb
  • Rubber Mallet — Tapping blocks into position
  • Safety Glasses — Eye protection during cutting and general construction
  • Tape Measure — Measuring block lengths and layout
  • Concrete Adhesive — Securing successive courses of paver blocks
  • Unilock Rivercrest Wall Blocks Unilock — Forming the risers of the steps and planter walls
