(20,001 characters)I got quoted $122,000 to finish off this brand new bathroom and today we're going to save a ton of money and DIY it ourselves let's get started so this is 54 square ft we have room for a vanity a toilet and a shower in order to have a more productive remodel here we're going to do it incrementally starting with the shower now be sure to follow all the way to the end of the video cuz I'll show you exactly what this renovation cost versus how much we were bit now so far for day one I've already picked up all my Sloter system we have our floor pan we have our c membrane we have everything so for the first day we're looking at 800 bucks it's only going to get better from here first order of business mix up our thin set get it wet don't get it too dry you'll get the best application first up cting membrane the drywall is blue you've probably seen it more green that's the water resistant mold and M resistant that's what that's for it's in the bathrooms and yes you can apply the c m right over that you don't have to go buy the foam stuff unless you take off your drywall but going to use my tri layer it down glue it on it's like hanging wallpaper it's not a big deal that's the great part about diying when it's your place it's all just one big ARs and [Music] crap and lastly we have the shower curb these are great even though they're add a styrofoam but time you put stone or tile on it it's really tough you got to make sure you get all the proper glue-ups on it and at the same time make sure you waterproof the corners very well the inside Corners outside corners and the whole Jazz but we are almost done that means tomorrow we could tile [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] yeah so we're getting stuff painted here we got Ben on top there on the ladder we're cleaning up all the gunk off of the Blue Lamp beam all that stuff got on there from spraying insulation that's on me painting and priming that's on Ben we're getting all all cleaned up getting ready to lay flooring here uh probably next week but uh all around everything's coming together working on the bathroom so we can tag team all this faster I'm trying to get this cabin done as fast as we possibly can how's it looking up there Ben good we're getting there slowly nothing like work at a high altitude huh [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh I actually saved a bunch of money on getting tile I got this from Home Depot it was like 200 bucks for 100 square ft which is money saved really well you'd imagine with a brand new construction that these walls would be dead flat they're not cuz by the time the type of lumber that they use for the framing the drywallers com in try to fix it so there's this kind of kicks out this way and this kicks out that way so with that corner created my little bevel Cuts just to start my line thank God I have my laser line here with me once we get that started and we'll start staggering them out large format tile got my 1/2 in Gaff TR let's get after [Applause] [Music] it so we're looking good all thanks to a lot of these wedges tile leveling mechanisms I used to have the little wrench that you can squeeze the pliers and then push it together can't find it so uh it's using by hand which is working out great everything is nice and flush I'm really happy with it definitely bummed out how the Wall came out but we're fixing those problems as we go my goal for today is to get all the way to this corner I got to buy a little corner tray just cuz I didn't want to put a niche in here and then we'll be able to fully wrap this thing hopefully by the end of tomorrow [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] so I got my mixing valve on here I'm going to be done here probably by the end of the day probably three more hours hopefully I can get started on the curb but I wanted to talk about should you use large format tile or smaller tile which one would be easier and what I kind of figured out is at least to my understanding I'm not a pro is that large format tile is easier to blend an area that's kind of wonky on you especially by using leveling kits like this and it goes a lot faster smaller tile installs easier I want to say just because you just kind of back butter and put on and climb up it's just harder to keep a straight line with them it's harder to fix any kind of waves and curves that come along the way both have positives both have negatives I just like to keep the smaller tile mostly for like backsplashes keeps my life just keeps my sanity really all right the shower is all done I got to get more tile tomorrow cuz I ran out of material for the curb but also uh it gives me enough time to go get another box or a couple of boxes for the flooring got about 50 s ft so shouldn't be too much but on another note Ben's uh rocking it out here doing the flooring here the walls are all painted the door are all painted it's looking less and less of a construction site and more and more of a cool home the one of the most common questions that I always get is what is our design process when it comes to building something we found that between Irene and I the best way to get on the same page as somebody who designs and somebody who builds to get on the same page is to have mood boards to make sure that we're both on the same creative path and accomplishing whatever we want to accomplish and that is why I am excited to share with you the sponsors of today's video milanote milanote makes starting a new project very easy with over a 100 built-in templates you have a creative space to apply to anything you're doing for example we're building out a brand new bathroom so I'm using the interior design mood board to make sure all the pieces that come together really work together and later on if I need to build a deck or take out a wall or open up a space I can use my architectural template and allow for the visuals to come together that way Irena knows exactly what I'm trying to accomplish here I especially like adding the comet feature on some of the things that I'm pinning to my mood board here that way I could clarify to Irene exactly where I'm going with so for example I found this vanity and what I loved about it is the natural wood tones and the towel storage down below so when Arena sees it she doesn't necessarily have to look at it and be like I just don't like that vanity maybe the stain or whatever she says oh I see where you're going with we want to bring this and that and this is what you're trying to accomplish I also really enjoy the Todo task feature and what it does is it helps me communicate to Irena what I need from her as I'm working on maybe doing the tile or building the vanity here's something that's super cool when you're ready to share your work with your team in my situation it's my spouse so I'll send the link to ireena she's seeing what we're we're planning on doing here I'm seeing her notes she's seeing my notes but also when it comes to getting another opinion I could simply send an invitation to my contractor to my flooring guy to my tile guy to maybe another interior designer a friend to get a second opinion on things you can easily do that and just share this workspace with them so they'll get the overall picture and get you back on task Millan note is perfect for creatives like myself where it allows for me to illustrate and express my ideas in a way that it makes sense to me and here's the greatest part Millan note is available for free with no time limits or anything so sign up for a hassle-free milanote account head to Millan note.com slmr builded or simply click the link in description below now let's go back to the cabin and handle this floor to [Music] oo look at that curb now one thing that you need to consider if you're going to do this yourself as well whenever you're doing the curb and you're putting tile at least you know even the size as this let alone the small pieces get a level and make sure everything is nice and level and basically in plain reason why is when you start buying the shower glass which we did buy and that is out of whack you're going to have a hell of a time installing that so A couple of things I learned off the bat don't get yourself caught with your pants down let's start working on the floor towel now I just something that my floor tile Fenbrook Regal from Home Depot actually matches slightly the penny tile inside which that's a a nice little coinkidink but here's the next thing that I'm trying to figure out I have two doors here and typically when you lay floor tile it has to go out forward like vertically but I have a second door here from the primary bedroom so the question is do I run it as a main entrance from the primary bedroom or do I run it from the hallway and now that I just set it out loud this would be used as you know a powder room as well you know guest coming use the restroom so this seems like the number one entrance and this is number two so number one it is going to start slapping it down I got new lifters that I'm excited to try these are Again Home Depot hopefully this goes nice and smooth and we'll get out of here and get grouting [Music] tomorrow when it comes to cutting out fanges in tile it's always annoying because it's really hard to get a really precise cut and I'll show you a quick way that it's kind of dummy proof for me so I'll lay out my tile exactly where I want it to look and now this is polished tile so pencils don't work well on it you can use a Sharpie but I don't have one next to me then I will Trace out the remainder roughly Trace out the remainder of the fange that needs to be cut all the way around cuz we can draw on the tap after that you'll need to pick up one of these Universal jigs that find any kind of weird shape that you need to cut and just put it against the fange and you'll get that little radius right so then all you got to do we know that our fange is 7 in long or wide put it on seven so this is our starting point mark R 7 put the rest of the radius there trace it move it around continue your radius so you feel far more comfortable and then at that point we can just take it out and cut with our grinder and then use our grinding wheel to cut that out and then we'll see how it looks we got our radius let's do a test fit boom just like that we're back in business [Music] [Applause] man I love how this floor towel came out this has been turning out so awesome I'm going to let this last section dry overnight uh then I'll come back take all these levels off grout Everything clean everything grout everything but in the meantime let's go back to the shop and start building our vanity because the way Irena wanted this thing it's not something you could buy so we're going to have to build one let do [Music] it all right so you you guys saw the mood board you saw the vanity and today we're have to figure out how to build something that resembles that now I can't well I don't want to build that vanity cuz I have to Mill giant stock for the legs and all that stuff but one thing I took away from the vanity is I like that it had a towel shelf down below I thought that was a pretty clever idea for storage so I drew up my little schematic this is just a rough framing it's got three drawers on the side sink down the middle our drain pipes slightly to the side and then we're going to have this giant 10in wide or 10in tall uh rack that it will be that shelf and we got little tiny little legs over there overall the vanity is going to be 54 in wide uh that's with a finished countertop so we're going to chop up all the maple plywood that we just picked up all in all so far I'm sitting about close to 300 bucks for the vanity fingers crossed we don't go overboard uh let's start breaking it down I've been in so many situations where I forgot to do this you build the entire carcass but then you got to attach your face frame and putting pocket holes is just a pain in the butt so you might as well plan for them right now I like to just kind of sketch out where those pocket holes are going to go to attach that face frame so that things go as smoothly as possible possible and we screw up less things in the process also a lot of people ask me what planning software do I use old school baby pen and paper old school is you get might as well be a tablet like the stone tablet I think I broke my foran oh snap the bit the pocket hole bit supposed to have a little tip to it and the entire tip just snapped off I was wondering why I was making like a weird noise oh that sucks I'm breaking things already man all right let's see if we can get it back in business here funny thing is I had this machine for maybe like 4 years now never once changed my bit and um well today we reap the repercussions of it looks like I just take this collar off and just slide that in there yeah we'll be back in business this is my favorite part about building cabinets is once all the cuts are done you assemble it and it's kind of like Legos ads got to make sure my pocket holes are facing the same way and I should stay out of trouble I'm 959 7% sure I cut all the materials that I need for the carcass uh I might be missing just the stretchers for the middle section I got the top ones and the back ones done but we'll get there what' you do are you coming visiting you have your snow boots on backwards nice are they backwards M yes it's okay I think one of the hardest parts of cabinet making is making sure your drawers specifically drawers are super Square just because I've been there before man where you put everything together you start installing your drawer slides and it goes in but then it just flares them out so by having little scrap pieces that I'm going to eventually use as stretchers on top uh support it helps you align everything don't go off of the old you know straight edge method making a squirt line things move make yourself a dummy proof template like this and you'll have equal spacings all [Music] around okay in case you're like what the heck is up with a snotch in the back let me explain the plumbing water lines are coming out of the ground because we have a shelf I don't want it to be visible so I created this Notch so the plumbing lines can come up and hook up to our sink that will be right here now because this is the towel storage section and we have now cabinets on Top This is a weak point so I'm going to put a piece covering this up like a blank wall and what that'll do is it'll support this section from pushing down I might also pull one recess in here just for that added support quartz countertop is heavy and there's no room for all gagging around [Music] here so what do you think of my cabinet carcass it looks beautiful you like it mhm so the next part is going to be the part that's really going to start making it pop out we're going to start making face frames on it and I'm using select Pine 1X two the reason why I select Pine is I figured it's the closest I got stain to Maple is Pine select Pine specifically it's not a perfect match but you can get away with it pretty well uh so what I'm going to do is start cutting these up these will go all the way straight we got Styles we got rails all of these we get dividers so it all start looking like it's kind of more put together if you will cut them all up throw pocket holes in the back and then as a one big uniform piece we'll attach it with glue and these premeditated pocket holes already threw on because why we're [Music] [Applause] [Music] smart Moment of Truth we nailed it boom wood glue pocket holes from the inside and this carcass is almost well I still get to hide well whatever let's just secure the [Music] sucker so before I get super excited and start flipping this thing uh on its proper side I'm going to touch the L these are I found at Home Depot I think they're made out of popler and the base on it screws on and then these screw on with the threads now here's the thing this is out of popler this is sel Pine Maple popler we're working with three different wood species so we're going to have to to think of a plan to get the most uniform stain on it cuz I really don't want to paint it I really want to give it a natural tone gu tomorrow Alex's problem right now we're going to install [Applause] these okay so I don't know if you notice anything different about this vanity since the last scene but it's completely different it's a completely different vanity and I'm an idiot and let me explain why this right here is the vanity that you've been seeing me build and I'm such an idiot that yesterday I went to the cabin to go check up on some things and I looked at my measurements and I was off by 10 in I built this thing 10 in too big I looked at the tape measure from the wall and saw 54 turns out I was looking at it upside down and it's 45 so that's what I get I get to make another vanny the cool thing is I'm going to reuse that for another project but I rebuilt this one made these openings equally the same size this is still the same the back is a little bit different I still put a backer piece in the back so you don't see the plumbing but I continue these shelves out I'll drill through these holes and puncture the water lines from the ground coming up so you won't see them and uh that's pretty much the only difference so now that's done let me build the drawers holy smokes did you guys get that on video look at this thing just fling right at me hit me right here avoided the uh you know Old Faithful down below jeez I'm glad I had my ppes and all that sunk safety glasses all that stuff up it could have gone worse 100% my fault this stuff is flimsy it bends right most of the time it already comes a little warped whatever it's quarter inch what do you expect from it so you have to keep consistent downward pressure not letting go at all and I didn't do that but number one thing that could have prevented this 1,000% is if I had my damn ring knife on my saw I always have it on but then I took it off because I was using my Crosscut sled earlier and man lesson learned keep your ring knife on kids and keep good pressure woo okay we're back in business nothing got chopped off you a/ Quin plywood but speaking of quinch plywood that's our bottom of our drawer half inch Maple for the drawers I have to edgeband them of course nobody likes those plywood and neither should you that's just lunacy s them together glue them all up let them dry install it [Music] you know what we're going to start doing we're going to start doing some doors and some drawer faces uh I got my select Pine here fortunately there's not a whole lot to do here one door four drawer faces I love using my router for this kind of stuff just because how Flawless and repeatable things are we got our bit for our rails we got a bit for our Styles we got a bit this pancake looking sucker for our panel Shaker style doors throw them up hopefully I can get done gluing them up here in the next hour and a half fingers crossed let's [Applause] [Music] party I'm not going to lie I almost just had a panic attack here I was B basically had this hodg podge of style rails and panels and uh it wasn't lining up and then I realized I didn't do a good job organizing my workspace so finally we got our head clear no tears today got a dry fit this is the small drawer big drawers and then one big door for accessing the plumbing underneath going to start gluing them up wood glue uh the most important things couple of things actually the most important thing is this Center panel do not glue that down wood needs to move that's supposed to be a free floating panel if you glue it down your doors will warp within like a year and second thing is when they're Glu up when you're clamping them make sure they're perfectly square and the way you do that real quickly is just from corner to corner if it's the same exact number you should be good to go let's get into [Music] [Applause] [Music] it absolutely beautiful tight…
