(13,865 characters)I want to talk about whether you should use a blue tape or not this really expensive stuff And I'll tell you why I have and have not used blue tape in the past in my career I've been painting for over 18 years now and I was got very accustomed to just removing the tape every day Paper plastic everything because I didn't want my customers coming home and feeling like they're in a construction zone So I just pulled all the paper and tape now when I say always there were always exceptions to the rule and one of them Is masking on to say floors and putting paper down on floors which is going to be there for multiple days But I got accustomed to using what we call production tapes and production tapes are your less expensive tapes That don't have what we call a longer release and one of the production tapes we use it It's CP 199 from sure tape and it has a three-day release and I'll talk about you know releases here in just a moment But you know we didn't use very often we didn't use like higher release tapes that have longer days like a blue tape Because it saves you a whole lot of money. So this tape right here a production tape or even a yellow production tape Can be less than a dollar roll or right around a dollar roll and a blue tape is going to be around $7 a roll So should you invest in the money and just using this as your everyday tape? Probably not. I know a lot of do-it-yourselfers are going to be masking and not completing the project today And they might be working this weekend and not get it done Leave the tape come back next weekend and start working on the same project That's definitely when you want to have the blue tape and invest in the money because if you use a production tape And that kind of situation when you come back next week and try to remove the tape It's going to splinter. It's going to leave adhesive behind and that is an absolute nightmare It's a professional painter's worst nightmare is using tapes that just don't perform well So I'm going to talk about some of the qualities about blue tape and one of them longer release It's UV resistant. It's heat resistant and it just has higher quality papers And so we're going to talk about some of those things and whether you should invest in blue tape right now So now I'm going to talk about release and if you've never you know heard of release So every tape has a release time and what that means is the tape is Recommended to be pulled up removed from the service in X amount of days So a blue tape all the blue tapes I researched have a 14-day release time So you need to pull it up from the surface within that period of time if not The heats up could dry to the surface. It could leave residue behind It also the tape on the paper itself could splinter and that is a real pain on the neck When you go to pull off all your paper and plastic you just want it to just come off nice and easily and not splinter where you're Happen to get up on a ladder or get down on the floor and start picking tape off the floor I've got multiple tapes here. I've got a this is a production tape We use most production tapes are a three-day release We don't like to leave them on for more than a day like I talked about this is sure CP 199 from shirt tape You've got yellow production tapes just like this This is a yellow production tape. It's got a three-day release We've got frog tape this frog tape green has a 21-day release. I've got a double-sided poly tape right here that we use when doing cabinets This has a 21-day release Frog tape now has a blue tape if you didn't know they don't only just manufacture a green tape They have a frog tape and I'll tell you some of the difference about frog tape blue versus their green tape This is a 14-day release So it's very important and that's one of the qualities You know about tapes is the release time so you just got to know you know what you're gonna be doing If you're gonna be pulling your tape off in one or two days There's absolutely no reason to be spending seven dollars a role for a blue tape You should just go right to a production tape. It's gonna save you money It's gonna perform just as well. So I'm gonna talk about the quality of the paper too So a blue tape typically a blue tape is gonna have a higher quality paper than say a yellow production tape This tape is gonna be a lot thinner of a paper and it's not gonna be as high quality if you put this on a floor People's feet the traffic is gonna be more likely to tear the tape Lift the tape up or it's just gonna wear out. There's a thickness difference So blue tape if I compare these two tapes the blue tape is a lot thicker And it's just a lot more durable of a paper and that's one of the qualities about blue tape It's and that makes it more expensive. It's got what we say a higher grade paper to it So another quality about blue tape versus some of the other tapes is blue tape is more UV resistant So if you're masking on the outside of a house the the sun is gonna be hitting the tape It's it's The the UV rays of the sun are gonna cause that tape to splinter It's gonna cause the the paper to dry out and just not perform as well So if I'm masking outside and I'm leaving my tape up for multiple days like a yellow tape or even an orange tape If I leave it up, you know for four or five days the sun's UV rays You're gonna deteriorate that paper make it dry out and cause it to once again splinter and splintering is One of those things is just gonna cause you so much time pulling up the tape getting rid of the adhesive It's just a lot more cost effective to step into a more expensive tape if you're accustomed to Leaving your tape on for multiple days now once again on an exterior We only mask what we can pull off or paint and pull off that same day if I don't get to a portion of the house That we've masked and we haven't painted that section We still pull off all of our masking and we do not leave it on overnight. I know one of my friends He's a painter. He masked the entire house the day before comes back the next day and sprays And to me that's when you'd want to step into a higher grade tape and spin the money if you're doing that type of Painting but everybody has their own different ways of doing things I just like to pull the masking the same day that we put it on and another thing about You know blue tape and some of the other tapes is it's more heat resistant So what does a heat resistant mean? So you know some of the research I did on some of the blue tapes one of them the blue tapes I looked into it's heat resistant up to 200 degrees for 30 minutes and so what does that mean if you're on top of a house where it's getting really really hot That you know it can be 150 degrees on top of the house and even the ambient temperature of a surface where you're masking on It can be even hotter than that and the heat resistance is gonna make it so that adhesive doesn't dry And the in the tape and the paper is not gonna fail so you can still pull it off really easily It's gonna stick to the surface and perform well now the heat heat resistant on some of the production tapes That I looked into was significantly less which means Masking onto roofs or hot surfaces if you're on to like a bronze anodized window and you're masking on that and that window is getting You know 200 degrees or hotter or 150 degrees that adhesive is start gonna dry when you pull it off It's gonna leave a adhesive about behind you're gonna have to be cleaning off that adhesive Which is an absolute nightmare now? I'm gonna talk about maybe some of the differences between blue tapes out there There's all kinds of different blue tapes available so I've bought a whole bunch of different ones And I started testing the performances of them in my office and Some places around my house. I have some on the office floor that have been there for over four months on the floor I put some on the walls and some of them literally were falling off the walls the next day and why is that and one of the things if you've If you've never researched or you didn't know there's a a Service or a product or a company out there's called Alibaba And if you guys say $5,000 $10,000 you can buy Palettes of tape any blue tape you want they'll put your label on it and it's gonna be an inferior tape There is a difference between tapes because I've been testing it and I've seen a big difference in qualities Of blue tape out there frog tape now they make a blue tape They've just recently got into the blue tape game and one of the differences between frog tape and every other Blue tape is frog tape blue just like frog tape green has Paint walk technology on the outside of the tape and that's one of the things about that And it makes it different than every other tape out there whether it's blue tape or any other tape They have a patented technology and they have a polymer that's on the outside of the tape And that's why it kind of looks like it's white has this white dust on the outside and that polymer is Expans or it's activated by liquid So when a paint like a water-based paint hits it It swells instantly so nothing can bleed under or leak underneath the tape And that's why you get laser sharp lines with frog tape So they've come out with a new product and this is frog tape blue So frog tape green has a premium paper and it's a premium tape That's why it has a 21-day release the paper on this tape is absolutely Amazing it's a phenomenal paper on the tape. They've they've now downgraded the From a premium grade to a medium grade paper So this paper is a great paper. It's pretty much typical and standard of other blue tapes But it does have the same polymer technology on the outside of the tape Frog tape green comes packaged individually in these plastic packages Frog tape blue has now packaged it in four packs contractor packages So it's decreased the price because of the packaging Decrease the price because of the actual paper on the tape So now you can buy frog tape get the benefits of Chris cream line Chris clean lines in a blue tape So now have you ever wondered why you know say a tape like this This has this frog tape right here blue. It has a 14-day release to it now This this roll of tape can sit there and sit in my van for literally a year And I can take the tape and I can pull it off and then adhesive is still nice soft It still performs well the tape does not splinter and yet once I put it on a surface Now all of a sudden I've activated this 14-day release time So I disembry certs contacted sure tape the manufacturer of this tape and ask like why in the world does that happen? Because I've wondered you know that for so many years so they have a Technology and all tapes use this technology and it's applying a Release coat to the paper of the tape so they apply a release coat to the paper the tape So now the adhesive always stays fresh once you pull it off Now it's not touching and the release coat of the paper the tape you've applied it to a surface now And now that activates the adhesive. I've wondered that for a long time I'm not sure if you've wondered that but that's what it's all about It's a release coat on the paper. So apparently all these tapes the paper has got a release coat on it And but I have noticed in the past some really really cheap production tapes some of those yellow production tapes that are like 60-70 cents a roll You know they'll sit in your vehicle for three or four months. You'll pull them out They'll stick and splinter really really bad and maybe those production tapes some of making it cheaper Maybe they're not putting a release coat onto the paper So in closing should you buy your blue tape if you don't do it yourself or even a professional painter You're gonna be leaving your tape on for three days or more Using a 14-day release tape is you know It's probably a really good idea and worth the money if you're gonna be taking the the pulling your masking off your paper your plastic with your tape You're within three days. It's you can save yourself a whole lot of money by just using a production tape We absolutely love the CP-199 from Sherp tape is our production tape I think it's somewhere around two dollars a roll most Most blue tapes out there they're gonna be somewhere around five to seven dollars a roll It just give or take it depends on your paints or what their price is in that locale and what your contractor discount is There's a lot of fluctuations in prices of tapes So I can't give you the exact price you know of the tape itself Yes frog tape is probably one of the most expensive tapes out there you can buy But it does have the patented paint block technology on it with that polymer that swells up It's if you want crisp clean lines It's the best tape that you can actually buy Hope you've enjoyed this video.
