Install Heavy-Duty Lag Screws for Ultimate Strength
At 0:20 in
All that metal is code, but we like to add this scab to help keep our post/beam acting as one unit!
What happens here
After securing the initial screws, upgrade to larger, stronger fasteners. Use an impact driver to install a heavy-duty structural lag screw, also known as a ledger or timber screw. These screws are designed for high shear and withdrawal strength, providing significant reinforcement to the joint between the horizontal beam and the vertical post. Drive the lag screw until it is fully seated and countersunk or flush with the surface of the wood. The worker explicitly mentions coming back with 'bigger lags' for this step, indicating a final, stronger fastening stage.
Goal: For maximum stability and load-bearing capacity, install long, heavy-duty structural lag screws through the horizontal beam and into the vertical post.
