What happens here

Prepare a test setup using an OSB panel with a wooden block attached. Fasten one side of the wooden block to the OSB using ring shank nails and the other side using structural screws. Use a Husky bottle jack to apply upward shear force to the block, centered to distribute the load evenly. Observe the failure characteristics and the force required to break the connections for both ring shank nails and structural screws. Structural screws exhibit significantly greater shear strength compared to ring shank nails in this test, with the nails bending while the screws hold until the wood fails.

Goal: Determine the superior fastener (ring shank nail or structural screw) for shear applications in OSB.

Tools and materials

  • Bottle Jack Husky — To apply upward shear force to the fastened block
  • Milwaukee Nail Gun Milwaukee — To drive ring shank nails into the wooden block and OSB
  • OSB Scraps — To serve as the base for this fastener test
  • Wooden Block — To be fastened with ring shank nails and structural screws
  • Ring Shank Nails — For fastening one side of the wooden block
  • Structural Screws — For fastening the other side of the wooden block
