7 construction Tests in 3 minutes! #framing #carpentry #construction

What happens here

Construct two identical test frames. For the first frame, use a plywood base, and for the second, an OSB base. Attach wooden blocks to each panel using a Milwaukee nail gun, driving common nails straight through the top of the blocks into the panel. Position a Husky bottle jack beneath the attached wooden block in each frame. Systematically apply upward pressure with the bottle jack to the blocks, observing the point and manner of failure for both the plywood and OSB connections. Note that plywood demonstrates better resistance in this test, though the nails eventually fail in both. This initial setup introduces the comparison between plywood and OSB for nail shear strength.

Goal: Compare the resistance of plywood and OSB to nails under shear stress.

Tools and materials

  • Bottle Jack Husky — To apply upward shear force to the nailed blocks
  • Milwaukee Nail Gun Milwaukee — To fasten wooden blocks to plywood and OSB panels
  • OSB Scraps — To form one of the test frames for nail shear strength
  • Plywood Scraps — To form one of the test frames for nail shear strength
  • Wooden Blocks — To be nailed to the plywood and OSB panels as test pieces
  • Nails — To fasten the wooden blocks to the panels
