What happens here
This project demonstrates how to create straight-line sipes (grooves) in heavy-duty truck tires using a heated tire groover. The process involves preparing the tire, marking a specific pattern inspired by winter-rated tires, and then carefully cutting the grooves into the tread blocks. The goal is to significantly enhance traction for snow-plowing and other heavy-duty applications on icy or snowy surfaces, providing a cost-effective alternative to purchasing dedicated winter tires or using chains.

(19,998 characters)all right good morning everyone let me tell you what it is a beautiful day up here in twin cities minnesota beautiful day which is pretty nice so we got a fun little video today uh we're finally taking care of something that we've been saying we need to do for quite a while and you guys have been saying that we need to do it and uh we're finally going to do it so i don't want to spoil a surprise right in the beginning of the video but we're on our way over to stands we gotta get some fuel first and uh we'll keep this intro nice and short so let's just get into the day well it started out as a beautiful day but as it does so often in minnesota it changed overnight and in fact what i mean is it snowed that very night which led us to the unique opportunity to test out what we're going to be working on today what we got the best tire groover i could find rating wise rating my receipt how much was this thing 530 dollars and 22 cents so we'll see if it's worth it now this one's supposed to heat up instantly is my understanding so as soon as you turn it on your blade gets hot which is what melts the rubber i bought i ordered an extra set of blades they haven't come so what we have here are just they're kind of they're a brand new ones yeah they give you a variety now these are super sharp oh yeah they will cut you so you see these fatter ones that's the part that cuts yep right down on the bottom so they've got rounded and then they've got flat bottom blades so actually i got them both out right here side by each and what you're going to see is the only reason i point this out it's something that i learned as i was doing this is the rounded one and then this is the flat bottom for us we're gonna go we need more flat bottom one because we need bigger get a better channel on there yeah okay i know that's a lot of information you will need a power source out there so oh all right yeah 110 volt i have not i have not looked at this beyond this at this point guys so we'll find out what these do how yeah and then it just plugs into a standard outlet all right now just one last thing how how much did you say this one was 530.22 500 that's enough money to buy like five catfish camaros and still have money over to buy more catfish camaros what does a catfish come here oh it's from the 90s what yeah [Laughter] bad joke i don't know what a cat this camaro is i've never honestly heard that i guess it's a i guess you could call it a derogatory camaro term catfish camaro the mustangs from like uh i think the 1989 the fox bodies yeah those oh my god those were horrible it's like what were they thinking oh man they wrecked them i mean it was so bad it almost became good at one point you know what it means those ones have a pretty good cult like cult following to them though dude i had an ex-girlfriend of mine she had one of those nasty looking mustangs and it was baby blue and it had four mustangs on the side like they were all racing and the shadow was coming off from one and i was just like you just cringed just looking at it going somebody did this on purpose yeah somebody actually there was a lot of people that were like wow this looks good let's do that sam and alex got a jump start on the grooving of the tires but then we had to bail because it snowed that evening we went out and plowed and i got a chance to actually test out the the sledge with just one tire groove i don't know if it was just in my mind but it it actually felt like it worked because as i was pushing into a pile that one back tire would bite more and so the machine was always kind of doing this weird on me [Music] make sure the cats are still on here nice all right well let's get this tire filled up so to fill up the tire we don't have power where the equipment is so damn run over to where we'd have power fill up three air compressors and come back and pump up the tire to get it just uh enough that we could drive it over to where we actually have power i actually don't think i've been in this thing yet this year 300 hours on it so far fires right up and i would say 299 of those hours have been snow plowing and i think one hour has been working in dirt these do not make efficient dirt machines but they are really good in snow you're gonna see a gentleman come out that has bought two of them he's gonna share his experiences of his so sam's making this look really easy so just watch real close how he's doing this because what i do is mine starts riding up he's keeping his perfectly flat that's the key i would say that this is a very viable alternative to on average we used about one to two blades per one of these tires and it took about one to two hours per tire to do see he wrote out that was a it happens but that's how you that's how i wrecked the blade rode out and pushed too fast see that's what you don't want to do it didn't it didn't bend it at all but you push too hard through there and you know hit that yeah that didn't bend it thankfully but me [Music] this is what's left this is the cutout from the tires so for the pattern what we'd looked at was the cooper tires that we have on our truck those work pretty good and just looked at what they did and duplicating it kind of this is a very very loader very budget cooper tire replica and so it's a pretty simple straight forward we're marking it i guess that helps you right sam yes it does okay so it speeds up the process because then he just follows the line instead of guessing and looking he just knows right where the line is i ran and got special silver markers you can see it better and then i'll just show you we just it's five five sipes per tire two three four five treads go that way we always go in the center of the tread pattern cut that big block in half and then on the opposite tire on the opposite tread they go the opposite way one two three four five there's no science to it beyond that i'm sure they're gonna somebody's gonna let us know that there's absolutely a science behind this yeah but not the way we're doing it we're just guessing the disclaimer is we're just doing it we're we're just freaking making holes yeah all right boys let's count to five after we do some ziggy zaggies three our custom and if these work good we're going to get requests to sype other people's tires with the custom dirt monkey snow tread oh yeah you're so nice this is pretty fun isn't it you didn't you weren't yeah you this is something it is satisfying just not spending five thousand dollars on tires just something satisfying about that it's like oh my god do i spend the money to get the tread pattern but of course then people be like well you're also getting the softer compound yeah well these piece of crap tires that they put on the sledge are soft well two it's not like you know we could just start stud the tires or get a set of chains either because we can't mess up the lot i feel like people are gonna say something about that and that is why we are not doing we can't do that i don't think stan wants to pay for a parking lot i did pay for a parking lot oh there's a story there what happened oh oil leaked out of the black hole oh no and uh went on the parking lot and we couldn't get it cleaned up enough to the account satisfaction so we had to grind the asphalt off and then i had to resurface it this was just a few years back another one this year and then one last year okay awesome you like them really yeah good for snowplowing right yeah but do you guys do use them for dirt work at all no okay that makes it not a dirt work machine because well we're what's in the tires what have you guys done with your tires nothing i've been watching you uh yeah i've watched all your videos what are you doing now we're making winter tires studs on them or something no we can't we're yeah here look we're making our own dude our custom cooper discoveries so that's awesome because you know this tire's you know 1500 to 2 000 bucks yup and i bought that whole machine that to do them for 500 bucks that means i'm doing all four of these tires for 500 bucks or these tires would be what three six grand i'll watch your your next video and see see how it is i mean this might be the last snowstorm that we can tell well we got that lot over there we're gonna test it in the in the snow nice icy which one nasty lot yeah the one that hasn't been plowed the snow down well tim it was nice to meet you man no problem yeah all right i want to clarify something real quick i was saying siping earlier and that's actually an incorrect terminology what i'm actually doing here sam is doing here is cutting grooves and in just a moment i'm going to demonstrate because sam's making this look easy i'm going to demonstrate that it's not quite as easy as sam's making this look [Music] okay sam is changing blades let's see how you do this thing now it even comes with an allen wrench okay so you just loosen those up a little bit well now what were you noticing with that old blade just quick cutting right or what yeah just quick cutting right it it seems like it'll get to a point there's some hard spots on here from where it wasn't sitting in there and i i've noticed after it's getting real hot after a little while it can kind of warm the blade it took about an hour and a half per tire and we did all four tires on the sledge just with the sample pack that was included with the original machine but how many tires did that blade do uh that would have been a little over one okay but it's cold too so i mean you did one of these so that's that's saying a lot well i did i did a whole tire well i did one and probably about one and a quarter tire on the first one and probably about one total on this on on this one so then you get they got different notches in there i can't remember if i have to change it for this one with the sharp part goes forward okay so there is a forward in the back so if you look real close underneath sam's nose pickers you can see these sons of guns these things are sharp too so yeah they'll watch you watch yourself when you're putting them in there and then you can set the depth pretty deep on here you can have them you know if you're going through something real deep that's about as deep as you can set it with these blades that we have oh so you can set the depth just by adjusting just by sliding it up and down yep so this is about where we've been that's about where i've been doing it at right right about there so changing blades is a moment in time oh yeah it's not a big deal and they last pretty good yeah yeah but a blade costs like three bucks oh yeah yeah i mean because i bought packs of whatever 10 or 12 of them for 20 bucks so and i bought three packs so we'll have for a while we'll be good we're set see how the new one cuts and you do say you can notice an improvement in performance on a new blade yeah oh boy that just goes right through it no worries i mean it still just slides through there even even when the blade is getting a little duller but you just have to put a little bit more back pressure on it you know i mean it's not terrible like you're not fighting the thing but i think this is a eight or a ten blade number eight or a ten i think this one is an eight we don't they we don't know because they don't tell us in the package oh they show you yeah in the instructions they show you what which ones are which oh okay okay good they have a whole lot of different kinds of blades for these things now you can use non-heated ones and that means you're basically just horsing your way through i don't even wouldn't ever even want to try to attempt to do that yeah i don't think so man i could see that cutting you up or wearing you out i could see that being a not good situation that would not be a very god you ever burn your fingers grabbing it does it instantly cool off no yeah it don't oh dude okay so it cools off instantly yep it heats up instantly and cools off because that as soon as that trigger pushes it in it's good to go and then right as soon as that gets off i'm not sure how they have that it's got to probably be the compound that the blades made out of but yeah it's cool huh as soon as as soon as that as soon as you hear the click it's hot and then as soon as it clicks off the other side it's not hot all right well let's hear the click and that quick d activates it and it's wow wow wow dang this looks pretty cool dude this company is impressing me man i love it when i spend 500 bucks and it's not a waste and it works how it's supposed to i know and then they got it they got the groove on here so that's going to be the middle of your that that's the middle of your channel right there so if you want you know that's a guide for lining it up and stuff okay i'm not quite i'm not quite there yet but now we're pretty close and um i did notice so you know you're you're pushing through here you're pushing through you're pushing through right and then it comes out of the end you know you kind of want to pull it a little bit so that it doesn't go forward and hit hit that because what i noticed on the first one is if you know you go flying through there real hard and then hit on like on the tread on the on the other side with how the blade is hot it'll it'll bend it real easy oh okay and then that'll start messing up your you know messing up the channel and stuff a little bit are you gonna let me try it once sam oh she's automatic yeah that's right that's what i'm saying as soon as that oh okay you just all right did i no yeah that's what i'm saying you want to pull it when you start getting the end because after you heat that up it's too fast it's going too fast okay i'm coming out pull back on it got it we're just slow you know boy she sails right just and it's not like i'm working hard at it ah i break it dude i'm out i wrecked it that fast sam oh yeah what you were climbing up you were climbing up and then it looked like it pushed back down yeah like so checking out let me see if i got another one see there's a bit of a learning curve to these things for sure yeah i kind of janked that didn't i yay good job dirt monkey you wrecked your last blade actually i have more blades at home you got one more one more okay i got more that just came in the mail i heard yeah you ain't you're not gonna do a dang thing with it like that all right i'm gonna let you do it again well technically the janked blade was actually still working but it wasn't giving me that consistent pattern now these are i wanna just talk about the difference between sipes and grooves in case i didn't cover that very well a sipe is a very extreme micro groove and in a soft winter tire it just kind of opens and closes as the tire flexes as it goes around the road what we're doing is we're cutting in grooves [Music] i want to talk about some of the different tire grooving machines out there be careful you guys because some of them say they get hot but they don't heat up real fast like this one you've got to let them warm up and now i never used them but i'm imagining that if you got to let it warm up it also might cool down and that may not be as safe as this thing [Music] all right those tires look sweet this is the first test of the new tires first gear so we will have a future snow plowing video coming out and we will have a lot more coverage of these tires in different types of conditions but what we're gonna do here is just warm it up and then take the machine over to the other side of the parking lot where it's a hundred percent snow covered and underneath there's a layer of ice and what that means is i'm gonna be able to scrape the snow off but still be riding on the ice which i think is a pretty good test to push these tires see in my opinion that run doesn't count very well because it was already bare asphalt i'm not on ice i want to be on just pure ice see what i'm scraping off though underneath is the ice that i'm seeking and this run is going to give it to me hey siri what's the tempo so it's 23 degrees outside so the sun is melting it it's hitting the pavement and freezing so this is slick stuff yes underneath you can see the layer of ice and that's what i really wanted to test these tires oh look at that rolling yeah get it girl yeah looks like our homemade winter tires are doing what they're supposed to do all right i'm feeling good about that the old tires would have never done that nope no way no way you guys know that watch [Music] she would have kept going i think we made a lot of an improvement on attraction of a machine for 500 bucks in like four hours of work yeah no that's what i was saying look at that sick pattern dude that's not a bad looking pattern no i am very pleased with how this turned out you did like 90 of the work so there you go guys let's go pat myself on the back you're gonna break your armpits oh yeah there we go all right you guys that's our video for today hope you guys uh had fun hanging out with us and we're just glad we got better and tired it may not be perfect but it's better than spending six grand on tires or five grand or whatever better than what it was and that's all that matters that's right all right you guys we'll see on another one what do we got coming up next sam i ain't gonna spoil the surprise oh tell them we got a good one coming we're going up north yeah we're going up north that's all you get oh no i've been telling them i told them i don't we're going up north we're going to test out a forestry mulcher we're going to disappear a cabin and if it works we're going to disappear a cabin we're going to take the forestry mulcher right into my cabin and see what it does so should be a fun week ahead and we got staina palooza coming yeah sam's favorite sam is sam likes some very weird things you guys he likes staining do you like painting too you do i don't like to prep on painting but i like i like the painting okay but i'll argue that nobody likes i'd have to agree with them on there that's our video god bless you guys hopefully we'll see on another one let's go put this bad boy away and i want to say thank you you guys i see what you're doing you guys are commenting you're helping the algorithm and you're hitting that like button and those things go uh so far and so just so much thanks you so much appreciation on my end to you guys so for that and we have a list of shout outs and the first one on the list is christy coppola whose birthday is april 7th
