What happens here

Spread a uniform 1-inch layer of concrete sand (also known as bedding sand or paver sand) over the compacted aggregate base. Use screed rails (metal pipes or wood boards) set to the correct final height, and then pull a straightedge across them to create a perfectly flat and consistent sand bed. Do not compact the sand. Begin laying your chosen pavers according to the design pattern, working from a fixed starting point (e.g., the house or a prominent edge) and moving outward. Maintain consistent joint spacing (typically 1/8 inch) between pavers using spacers if needed. Use a string line to ensure straight rows and curves. Cut pavers to fit edges and around obstacles using a paver splitter or a wet saw with a diamond blade. Finally, install rigid plastic or metal edge restraints around the entire perimeter of the patio and walkway. Secure these restraints into the aggregate base with 10-12 inch landscape spikes every 1-2 feet to prevent pavers from shifting laterally.

Goal: Install the paver surface for the patio and walkway, securing the edges to prevent movement.

  • Gloves — Protecting hands during handling of pavers and tools
  • Hearing Protection — Protecting ears from loud noise during paver cutting
  • Landscape Spikes — Securing edge restraints into the aggregate base
  • Paver Splitter Various — Cutting pavers quickly for straight cuts
  • Pavers Various — The surface material for the patio and walkway
  • Rubber Mallet — Tapping pavers into the sand bed for proper seating
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during paver cutting
  • Screed Rails — Guiding the straightedge to create a level sand bed
