What happens here
After excavation, lay a high-quality geotextile fabric (also known as landscape fabric or filter fabric) across the entire excavated area. This fabric acts as a separation layer, preventing the aggregate base from sinking into the subsoil and inhibiting weed growth. Overlap seams by at least 6-12 inches. Next, begin adding the aggregate base material, such as ¾-inch crushed stone or gravel (with fines), in uniform layers of 2-4 inches. After spreading each layer with a rake, thoroughly compact it using a heavy-duty plate compactor. Make multiple passes in different directions until the layer is dense and stable. Continue adding and compacting layers until the base reaches the desired height, maintaining the 1-2% slope. Ensure you leave sufficient depth for the bedding sand (typically 1 inch) and the thickness of your chosen pavers.
Goal: Create a stable, well-drained, and load-bearing foundation for the patio and walkway.
