Take a small amount of new plumber's putty, warm it in your hands, and roll it into a thin, snake-like rope. Apply this rope of putty to the underside of the new drain's flange. This will create a watertight seal against the tub. Next, apply pipe dope to the male threads of the new drain fitting. This lubricates the threads and creates a secondary seal with the female threads of the plumbing below.
Goal: Clean the tub surface and prepare the new drain with sealant.
