In this video
Attach a garden hose to the drain valve located at the bottom of the water heater tank. Route the other end of the hose to a floor drain or a suitable location to discharge hot water. Open the valve by turning the slot with a flathead screwdriver. To help the tank drain faster, go to a faucet inside the house and open the hot water side. This allows air to enter the tank, preventing a vacuum. Drain the tank completely if replacing the lower element, or halfway for the upper element. Once drained, close the valve.
Goal: Remove water from the tank to expose the heating element.
