FAQs

Why is disconnecting the power at the circuit breaker the very first step?

Disconnecting the power is crucial for safety to prevent accidental activation of the disposal while your hands or tools are inside or near the unit. It eliminates the risk of severe injury from the spinning impellers.

What if I don't have a special garbage disposal wrench?

If you don't have a specialized garbage disposal wrench, a 1/4-inch Allen wrench can typically be used. This common tool fits into the turning port at the bottom of most garbage disposal units, allowing you to manually rotate the impeller.

After manually rotating the impeller, my disposal just hums but doesn't grind. What does this mean?

A humming sound indicates the motor is receiving power but cannot spin the impellers. This often means the motor is seized, damaged, or burned out. In most cases, if clearing the jam doesn't resolve this, the entire unit may need to be replaced.

I'm having trouble finding the turning port or rotating the impeller. Any tips?

The turning port is usually a hexagonal hole located directly in the center of the bottom of the garbage disposal unit. Use your flashlight to clearly see this port. You may need to apply firm, consistent back-and-forth pressure to free a stubborn jam.

okay all right so now when mine jams I've actually got to crawl underneath the sink and I was given a wrench and I try to kind of turn it and wrench it backwards is that the best way to do it well there's one way to do it most disposal are shipped with a small allen wrench like this at the very bottom you see an allen connection right here now while I'm down here I want to point out one more thing and that is a reset button if you did have a jam this motor would overheat and this button would pop so you would have to hit that button now if I'm trying to clear the jam and I move this back and forth move this back and forth what would happen is if it jammed up in there it might come free so that's that whole idea of reversing direction right so now the challenge is how do you get that part out of there you don't want to put your hand down there you never want to stick your hand down so there's a bunch of ways you can try tongs there's also a really cool tool which is an extractor look at this device okay so now I can get down into a tight space and try to pull that back out very clever you always got something there's some other tools though if that doesn't work the next line of defense is a couple of broomsticks broomsticks you come in and you cross them this way and now you try to push it this way so give you a little leverage to help turn it that's right you a little unwieldy and this this tool is a favorite this is designed expressly for this it allows you to come down through the opening in the sink and now it sits down right here and works much like the broomstick but it really makes a positive bite well
