When an existing stair landing or tread is not perfectly square, a pre-cut replacement based on 90-degree assumptions will result in a noticeable gap along one or more edges. To identify this, position the pre-cut piece (or a rough template) in place. Observe where the gaps occur. To accurately measure the deviation, place a framing square firmly against one straight edge of the existing stair component (e.g., the front edge). Measure the largest gap between the other arm of the framing square and the side edge of the stair component. For example, if the gap is 1 5/16 inches at a certain point along the edge, this measurement quantifies the out-of-square condition.
