Step 2 · Step 2: Measure the Depth of Each Tread

Let's measure the depth of each of your 10 treads. The 'depth' is the surface you step on, from the back of the step to the very front. Place your tape measure against the vertical panel at the back (the 'riser') and extend it straight out over the rounded front edge (the 'nosing'). For a true, accurate reading, it's critical that the tape is held flat and level. Be sure not to measure over any existing carpet or bumps. Record the depth for each individual step; this ensures your new treads provide perfect coverage for enhanced safety.
