Take the first stair tread and place it on the lowest step. Use a tape measure to ensure the tread is centered on the stair and that there is a consistent gap from the side walls on both sides. Also, measure the distance from the front edge (nosing) of the stair to the back of the tread to maintain uniform placement. Mark the desired position lightly if necessary.
