Next, determine the width of each tread. Stretch your tape measure across the tread, keeping it parallel to the back riser. If your staircase is enclosed by walls, measure directly from wall to wall. If one side is open, simply measure the full width of the wooden tread. For a classic, bordered aesthetic, many homeowners choose a tread width that leaves about 1 inch of wood visible on each side. For example, a 36-inch wide staircase would perfectly accommodate a 34-inch wide tread. Most residential stairs are between 36 and 42 inches wide, but measuring yours will guarantee a perfect, custom-made to fit result.
