Getting an accurate count is the first step toward a successful installation. Begin by counting the number of horizontal surfaces you step on—these are your treads. A quick tip: you'll always have one more vertical riser than you have treads. Then, assemble your tools. For a professional result, you'll need a rigid tape measure, a carpenter's square, a level, some masking tape, and a pencil and paper to record your dimensions.
