Step 2 · Step 2: Measure the Depth (Front to Back)

Now, let's measure the depth, also known as the 'run,' for each individual tread. Place the end of your tape measure firmly against the vertical riser at the back. Extend the tape straight across the flat part of the tread and over the rounded front edge, often called the 'nosing.' It is critical that your tape measure remains flat and level. For true accuracy, never measure over existing carpet, vinyl, or old adhesive, as this will prevent your new treads from sitting securely. Record the depth for each step. While standard tread depths are often 10 to 11 inches, your home is unique—always trust your own measurements.
