Step 1 · Safety First: Disconnect Power

The most critical first step is to ensure your safety by completely cutting power to the garbage disposal. Go to your home's main electrical panel and switch off the circuit breaker that controls the garbage disposal. If you're unsure which breaker it is, turn off the main breaker for the kitchen. Alternatively, if the disposal is plugged into an accessible outlet under the sink, simply unplug the power cord. Double-check that the power is off by flipping the disposal's switch on the wall; it should do nothing.
