Step 5 · Clean and Deburr the Pipe Ends

After removing the damaged section, the ends of the remaining cast iron pipe must be prepared for a proper seal. Use a wire brush to thoroughly clean the outside of the pipe ends, removing all rust, scale, and debris. Clean back at least 3 inches from the cut. Then, use a metal file or a deburring tool to smooth the inside and outside edges of the cut, removing any burrs or sharp points. Wipe the cleaned area with a dry rag.
