Step 1 · Isolate and Drain the System

Before starting any repair, you must shut off the water to the pipe. Locate the main water shutoff valve for your house (often found in the basement, a utility closet, or near the water meter) and turn it clockwise until it is fully closed. To relieve pressure and drain water from the system, open the faucet at the lowest point in your home (e.g., basement sink or outdoor spigot) and also open the faucet closest to the repair area. Place a bucket directly under the leaking section of the pipe to catch any residual water that will drip out during the repair. Use old rags or towels to protect the surrounding area from water spills.
