Step 2 · Shut Off Water and Drain the System
Locate the main water shut-off valve for your entire house. It is typically found in the basement, a utility closet, or near the water meter. Turn the valve clockwise until it is fully closed. To drain the remaining water from the pipes, go to the lowest level of your home (like a basement sink or outdoor spigot) and open the faucet. Also, open the faucets near where you will be working. Water will drain out, de-pressurizing the system. Place a bucket and some old towels under the work area to catch any residual water when you cut the pipe.
