Step 3 · Cut the Opening in the Drywall
Put on your safety glasses and dust mask. Before making the full cut, use a utility knife to make a small exploratory hole in the center of the rectangle. Look and feel inside for any unexpected wires or pipes. If the area is clear, use a drywall saw. Plunge the sharp tip of the saw through the drywall at one corner of your outline and carefully cut along the pencil lines using a back-and-forth sawing motion. Keep the saw blade as perpendicular to the wall as possible for a clean cut. Remove the drywall piece once all four sides are cut.
