Step 1 · Inspect Deck for Damage
Examine every part of the deck, including the railing, steps, and support posts. Look for splintered wood, areas that feel soft or spongy (indicating rot), and any fasteners that have come loose or are protruding. Pay close attention to the connection points where the deck attaches to the house and where boards meet joists. Any loose railings or unstable steps should be secured. Significantly damaged or rotted wood may need to be replaced.
