Step 2 · Measure Your Tread Depth

Using your tape measure, find the depth of a typical stair tread. A 'tread' is the flat part you step on. Measure from the very front edge of the step (often called the 'bullnose') straight back to the point where it meets the 'riser,' which is the vertical piece connecting the steps. Getting this right is key for peace of mind.
