Using your tape measure, find the depth of a typical stair tread. A 'tread' is the flat part you step on. Measure from the very front edge of the step (often called the 'bullnose') straight back to the point where it meets the 'riser,' which is the vertical piece connecting the steps. Getting this right is key for peace of mind.

Now, measure the total width of your stair tread from one side (e.g., against the wall) to the other (against the banister or open side). This is typically the longest dimension and provides the baseline for deciding how wide your carpet treads should be.

The 'reveal' is the space of exposed wood you leave on either side of your carpet tread. It frames the tread and adds a touch of design elegance. A common reveal is between a half-inch to several inches. For a great DIY-friendly tip, use painter's tape to mark out the tread placement and visualize the reveal before you order.
