What happens here
After replacing the inner cover, address the screened bottom board of each hive. This screened bottom is designed to allow air circulation and mite drops during warmer months. For winter, slide a sheet of corrugated plastic into the designated grooves at the back of the screened bottom board. This plastic insert will block cold drafts and prevent excessive heat loss from the bottom of the hive. Ensure the plastic is fully inserted to seal off the screened area. The presenter also shows a mite-counting grid that can be placed on the plastic to monitor Varroa mite populations without opening the hive, though he notes he doesn't treat for mites, allowing nature to take its course.
Goal: Insulate beehives from below by inserting corrugated plastic into screened bottom boards.
