Will This Change The Way We Build? THE GLASS HOUSE EP 2

What happens here

Due to the varying sizes of lumber and potentially mismatched bracket sizes (e.g., a 6x6 bracket used with a triple beam), use shims to 'pack out' any gaps between the beam and the pile head brackets. Tap the shims into place with a hammer to ensure a snug fit, creating a tight and stable connection. Check the level of the beams using a long spirit level to ensure a flat deck surface.

Goal: Achieve a level and tightly secured beam structure.

What they say

Hide

do is before we set them all, this bracket is made for a 6x6, not a triple beam. So, we just need to pack this out on one side and uh make sure it's nice and tight and then we can lag it in. But you can also see we put our tape on here and you can see what a great job it's doing at keeping water out from in between those pies. That is something to consider. We're kind of making it standard practice now to just tape everything. We don't see a lot of rot in the tops of joist when we do demo or go back to stuff, but you know, we still want the joist to be black so that they disappear uh with our fasteners and everything. You don't see the framing. So, um painting it, taping it. We're just going to make it standard practice to just tape all of our joists. And uh they do require it with this true frame joist system because it goes through a planing process. So even though the treatment of this really goes deep, it's a little hard to see on this one, but um even though the treatment does penetrate like into the core of the wood, um they recommend any cut edges like a planing uh situation here to be uh protected with tape. So uh something to think about. And you can see you can see what the tape's doing on top of our laminated beams. It's keeping all that water out, which is great. >> There's this house >> How are we looking here? This one. This one's good. Okay. So, we got pieces of fascia and pieces of decking. plenty of options. We've got this shimmed up. Now, what we can do is take this guy, slam that in there. That's how we like to pack it out. And you can see now we've got it nice and tight here, and we've got it uh spaced out here. We'll send our legs through both sides, and we'll be good to go.
