Why isn't everyone farming like this?
What happens here
Convert deep woods into silvopasture by selectively cutting trees and clearing undergrowth. Pigs are then rotated through half-acre paddocks using two strands of electric fencing (powered by an energizer). Move pigs every 5 to 12 days to new paddocks. The pigs forage for up to 40% of their diet from the pasture, improving the fat profile of their meat (making it polyunsaturated, like 'olive oil pigs') and adding iron, which results in a desirable rose-colored meat. The gentle disturbance from the pigs also awakens latent seed banks in the soil, promoting new growth.
Goal: Establish and manage silvopasture areas for pig rotation.
Tools and materials
- Electric Fence Energizer — Powering the electric fence to contain pigs
- Electric Fencing — Creating temporary paddocks for pig rotation (two strands are shown)
- Heavy Equipment — Excavation and initial land clearing/shaping
- Pigs — Foraging, disturbing soil, and converting forage into meat
- Pond N/A — Source for pulled silt used in land building and filling gullies
