You have a job opening as an equipment operator and you have two candidates apply. Candidate one comes to you with a four-year college degree. He successfully completed a Bachelor of Science and is ready to go to work. He graduated from a high-end college and wants an opportunity to prove himself, but he has no prior experience at all. Candidate number two is currently going to a technical or a trade school. He hasn't finished his degree yet and when you ask him what he likes to do on the weekends, he says that he likes to go hunting and fishing and spend time playing video games with his buddies online. Which candidate do you pick and why? Real-world question, who's more valuable to you? The college degree or the person who hasn't even finished technical school yet? Here's my two cents on it. I'm going to take the technical guy all day long because what we do requires us to get dirty and not be afraid to work with our hands. And the guy that's going to technical school is already familiar with what it's like to work with his hands and if he's spending his free time playing video games, his eye-hand coordination should be off the chart. Candidate one, the college degree, may come in with some preconceived notions that that piece of paper that he successfully got means he should be paid more and I don't want to be the guy that has to reprogram him, but which one are you guys going to choose?
