Weak Kohler Toilet Flush-EASY FIX!...How to Replace a Flapper With Float

What happens here

After installing the new flapper, it's crucial to adjust the chain length for optimal performance. The chain should have just a little bit of slack (play) to allow the flapper to seat properly without being pulled up, but not so much that it sags excessively. To adjust the chain, locate the small metal clip at the end of the chain that attaches to the toilet handle lever. Use a pair of pliers (the presenter uses a multi-tool) to gently open this clip, allowing you to detach it from the lever. Then, adjust the length of the chain by sliding the clip to a different bead on the chain, re-closing the clip to secure it. If necessary, also adjust the small clip on the flapper itself that holds the float to the chain. The goal is to find the right balance where the flapper opens fully during a flush and then seals completely when the handle is released. Fine-tune by re-attaching the chain to the lever at different points until the desired slack is achieved. The presenter notes that a 'standard' flapper might be easier to adjust, but this specific type requires more attention.

Goal: Optimize the flapper chain's length for proper toilet flushing and sealing.

Tools and materials

  • Flapper Chain Kohler — Connects the flapper to the flush handle, requiring length adjustment
  • Pliers — To open and close the metal clips on the flapper chain

Okay, so the first part of this We're going to do is we're actually going to so the first part of this we're gonna do is we want to make sure our chain link Is long enough, right? You don't want it so short that it kind of pulls the flapper up like that And you don't want it so long that it sags like crazy So what we're looking at here Is we want just a little bit of playing it so in order to adjust this to where it's gonna fit on On our handle right here. We're gonna just go ahead and pull off the leatherment And you just take this and we're gonna just separate this just a little bit We just want to be able to open that up that way this just slides out easy And we're able to remove that So then we can take this Bend this out a little bit you just bend this out That pops out and they make it towards pretty secure, right? Just to make sure we get a good kind of a good measurement you want to make sure you got a good measurement like I said these are a little bit tougher Then Trying to hook up the other ones right like a standard flapper This is just a little bit more involved Open that up we'll get this in here And it would just get it measured to where we want it So you get that all hooked up Put it through one side You can see just get it through one side and then you can slide it down to wherever you want it And A little bit further than that So That's probably pretty good right there You just take it Slides right back down in place and you just bend the clip back to where you need it Then we'll pull this clip right here off Get this through right here Get it back in place where we need it Get our leather man And just get it hooked back up Might have to bend a little bit more Just make it where it works Okay, and we're in place So that you take that Pop that on there and now we've got a pretty good setup Right we've got it towards got a little bit of play There's a little bit of a level there And we'll see what it looks like I'm not going to clip this off yet This extra chain until I know that that's where I want it to be okay So let's go ahead and we'll turn the water back on And then we'll give it a flush see if we need to adjust it
