What happens here
To replace the rear differential fluid, first confirm that the fill plug (the upper plug) can be removed before draining the fluid from the drain plug (the lower plug). This is a crucial step to prevent being unable to refill the differential if the fill plug is seized. Use a ratchet with an appropriate socket to loosen and remove the fill plug. Then, place a drain pan beneath the differential and remove the drain plug to allow the old differential fluid to drain completely. Note any metal shavings or sludge on the magnetic drain plug, which can indicate wear. Once drained, reinstall the clean drain plug and tighten it securely.
Goal: Remove old fluid from the rear differential.
