This video demonstrates the top five practical uses of a speed square in carpentry and DIY projects. It covers essential functions like marking straight lines, drawing miter angles, scribing parallel lines, serving as a guide for a circular saw, and functioning as a protractor for angle measurements. The video also briefly touches upon the tool's origin.

Top five uses of a speed square. So, the speed square was invented in 1925 by a guy named Albert Swanson. And yes, the Swanson company is still around today making speed squares. Albert himself, Mr. Swanson, was sick of having use your just your average square. He didn't like the math involved, so he created what we have now as the speed square. The speed square was known to do two things. One, speed as far as layout goes, whether you're quick measuring something, finding degrees of things, and then also your square, which obvious, your 90, squaring things up. So, here are the top five uses of the speed square. So, the top two uses in what we pretty much everybody knows this as is one, perfectly straight line, but also having a 45 for your miter. Another common use, which not many people know, but some, is your scribing. So, say you want to go an inch and a half, put your pencil in there, scribe a line. Say you want to go three, scribe a line. Swanson also intended it to be used as a guide for your circular saw. Now, a lot of people, they push the square towards them. I like to go ahead and flip it and pull it. It gives me a lot more grip on the board and leverage, and then you just go ahead and line up your saw, make a quick cut, and you're done. Swanson also designed the speed square to be a protractor. So, if you have your your pivot point here on the edge of your board, you can go ahead and keep that pivot point locked, but rotate your square. Let's say we want 25°. So, here's 25°. So, keep that locked, find your 25, and that's 25. If we want to go to 35, we can bring that square to 35, and that's 35. So, those are the top five uses for a speed square. The uses that Swanson intended them to be used in. Go ahead and drop a follow. I'm going to be doing some more videos on this this week. See you.
