What happens here
This video details the repair of a loose and improperly installed shower arm that was leaking behind the wall. The process involves opening the bathroom wall, removing the old, unstable plumbing connection, installing new, secure wooden blocking, applying plumber's tape and pipe dope to the new shower arm's threads, and securely re-installing the shower arm. The repair ensures a stable, watertight connection.

(10,333 characters)hey folks dot fix a guy here and today we've got a serious shower head problem like as you can see there is way too much play so I'm going to show you what we walked into and I'm gonna show you how to fix it so come along let's get to fixing [Music] all right so the first thing I found is if you take this discussion off of here there actually is oh they made a little shim out of a plastic top right you can see that thing is way too gnarly so there are times where I would plug this hole up and put some water weld in there but this is way too bad this is a nice tile job we're not trying to tear up before we go around the back side we're going to want to take this off right here hopefully it's secure enough that we can take this and we can spin it out no it's not that is a bummer you know it's bad back there if you can't even take this shower arm off at all [Applause] right but here's what we're looking at back here this is the water line coming in it's right next to this Edge which I'm anxious to see what this is going to do for us this could really end up sucking but if you look over here they actually didn't even connect to this piece so that right there it's just a junk install oh man yeah like right away you can see that this side of this fitting is just not even on there they got this all jacked up okay so we can see like this is just jacked this wasn't even screwed into that piece of wood at all and tried to screw it in between the two pieces all right so let's just see if we can get that out of there it looks like this is split anyway there we go good we'll be able to pull this out if we can actually move it to the side now with the PEX we we got play all day this is definitely not the way you usually tighten or untighten these such a weird angle grab our pipe right by the fitting right there with those grab the fitting itself right there all right all right we should be able to spin that out now yeah and now we're just able to spin this out it's a little crazy yeah this actually is an awesome shower head I think we might keep it and do something else with it if we put it up a little bit higher it would be awesome right the problem is it's down so low that I mean really you've got to be pretty small to actually have that feature going for you so I've had a little bit of time to think about what I was going to do with this thing so I'm going to take this I'm going to screw this right on the edge of a piece of wood I'll shoot one screw in a little bit going this way that way I actually catch wood get these two solid and get this put back in place I'll shoot screws right here it's a little bit smaller than a piece of 2x4 I'll put one over here as well and then I'll put a piece of plywood right here and screw that together and that way we're actually going to skirt right behind this and we'll make this pretty solid and it should never come apart like that again like you can see I could try to notch a two by four this way as well and I could have done that but really I don't know I think the way that I'm gonna do it is going to end up being a bit better than this side up so all right so I got a piece of two by six that I kind of chopped up and trimmed down and I'll just end up taking this and instead of being right here on the edge we'll just go in a half inch that way I can actually put the piece of plywood right there afterwards and kind of secure it a little bit more okay well I'm just going to take my pencil kind of Mark see that's where the center is that's where the top is that way I just know whenever I shoot some screws in here that I'm going to miss that whole setup okay I want to get down low I want to get up high [Applause] you know pre-drill this real quick and should be good to rock and roll so here's how I was going to roll with this this is where the Block's gonna go I'm just going to hold this right in place bend it down this seems very convoluted it's really hard to do these things sometimes from the back side any ideas actually would be great but bam not that one not that one right there but these three right here pre-drill Bam Bam and Bam then I should be able to just screw those in place all right so my thought is I need three screws for that so I went with three inch and a quarter Torx bit and then I went with four three inch Torx bit to go into the sides here right to each there should be plenty should hook it right up I wish I had my impact I don't okay that looks good at least we got one on I don't actually know if you can see that we'll see oh you know what it was the bottom hole so crazy it was the bottom hole like there was two that I marked off and that was not it well drilling it on the Fly yeah I just didn't think that was the case that's all right and now that is sturdy so before I secure this in place I just want to make sure this is going to work so I just want to hold that right there and I want to make sure because that's pretty much where it's going to go close enough I guess a little more back that'll be fine we can get that squared up but I just want to make sure it looks good in that hole over there all right so check that out we're spot on so what I want to do is I'm actually going to put that shower arm in there and we'll get that hooked up before we actually secure all that in place make sure it looks pretty it's all good to go if you can do this with two people do it okay because with one it's kind of a little bit difficult so I went ahead and I picked up this standard six by inch and a half shower head right it comes with a discussion this setup is actually going to be a little more ideal for this shower the way that you know how low that hole is so what we're going to do here is we're gonna pop that on and then we're gonna get that all secured up we'll get this snugged up just a little bit and then we'll finish tightening once everything behind the wall is good get that slid all the way down to the end as far as we can down there that would just give us a little depth inside of the wall finger on there not the first thread but a little bit after that this is thin stuff five wraps or so because I'm inside the wall I like to add a little Mega lock people always freak out about the Teflon and pipe dope I've talked to numerous plumbers about this though and a lot of them do the same thing so we all do what we do right and we'll take this bad boy that right in there get it started this can be hand this can be tightened the rest of the way whenever this thing is put in place right but right now we've got it to where it's coming out of the wall so let's just leave it like that and go back to the other side all right that looks better sometimes you just gotta smack it with a hammer a couple times we'll pre-drill and then shoot another screw right there in the middle all right so that's going to work out awesome right there let's get this back in here my pre-gels might not work so well that's all right we'll get that figured out all right so now I'm just going to secure this piece of plywood here and here and we'll be good to roll these are nowhere near long enough to go through this board and the whole way through this other board to hit that water line just so you guys are aware so that's solid that ain't going nowhere that's going to be a good fix there should be no issues we're gonna put that together on the other side and give it a test all right so if you get up under here it can't really take this out anymore but you can see that there actually is Gap the whole way around this it's not just pinched to one side it's good like this is going to be great we'll be able to just tighten this up now and get this tested okay so now to tighten this okay so now to tighten this so I don't scratch the Finish I like to just go ahead and I like to take my channel locks and spin like so okay this is gonna ensure that you get a nice tight fit it's straight let's push back on we'll be able to look that out see if there's a leak but the nice thing is that actually we'll be able to see if there's a leak from the back side a lot of people give me crap for putting Teflon on a shower head and they say oh you don't need that blah blah look right here sealant tape apply to shower head manufactured says so righty tighty lefty Loosey you're putting Teflon on three to five wraps so there is a screen and a washer down in there and that is gonna seal this but they want it man it's their stuff dude this piece right here loosens up so you can maneuver that and put it wherever you want like that's gonna be pretty tight right there so this is plastic you might want to put like a quarter turn on to Snug this up be some of that plastic that it came with or use a towel and just take that right around there and give it just a little bit all right and that's actually going to protect that finish it comes with all this plastic it might as well be good for something the hose is going to have a couple washers in them too make sure those don't fall out so then we'll take the big shower head get that on hand tight and then that's going to sit right down in there right like so okay and there we go we'll give it a little bit we'll let it run we'll go check it from the back side and we should be sitting pretty all right so then we'll get up in here and I'm feeling that I don't feel any water coming down there's no drips no anything all right so then we just covered it back up and we're gonna see what my friend wants to do with the drywall and then if you notice there was just a little bit of mold in there and I think it was probably from when they did the remodel and they just left a little bit of water on that insulation but we'll see what he wants to do all right folks so we're good to go this definitely took quite a bit of time right this is a job anytime you're trying to do a job in Reverse essentially is the way it is like it's a bummer but we got it hooked up we didn't have to go through the tile and we saved a boatload of money that way all right it's actually done it's solid and it's gonna last a long time I really hope you folks are enjoying the videos you can please subscribe click the like button follow us over on Facebook we're just trying to help any which way we can really thank you very much and we'll see you
