This roof is really starting to take shape!!

What happens here

Place a metal post cap, which serves as a structural connector to join a beam to a post, securely onto the top of a main vertical support post. Use a hammer to gently tap the post cap into perfect alignment, ensuring it sits squarely and level. Next, take a vertical wooden plank, which could be a trim piece or a secondary support member, and position it along the side of one of the main support posts. Using a pneumatic nail gun, drive multiple nails through the plank and into the post at regular intervals to securely fasten it. Verify that the plank is plumb (vertically straight) before final nailing.

Goal: Reinforce post-to-beam connections and add secondary vertical framing elements.

Tools and materials

  • Air Compressor — Providing compressed air to power the pneumatic nail gun
  • Hammer — Tapping metal post caps into alignment and making minor adjustments
  • Pneumatic Nail Gun — Quickly and securely fastening wooden planks to support posts
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes from flying debris and nail gun operation
  • Safety Gloves — Protecting hands during handling of lumber and tools
  • Framing Nails — Fastening wood planks with the pneumatic nail gun
  • Metal Post Caps — Creating strong structural connections between vertical posts and horizontal beams
  • Vertical Wood Planks — Secondary framing elements or decorative trim pieces along main posts
