What happens here

The initial phase involves clearing the existing landscape and performing extensive excavation using heavy machinery like an excavator. This is crucial for establishing the different levels of the multi-level patio and ensuring proper drainage and depth for the base materials. Soil will be removed to create the desired contours for the upper platform, kitchen area, and lower-level dining space. Trenches for utilities (like the visible yellow pipe) and footings for structures (like the Sono tubes for the pergola) are also excavated during this stage. Precise measuring and leveling tools are used to ensure the correct rough grades are achieved.

Goal: Clear site and excavate to rough grades for patio levels.

Tools and materials

  • Dump truck — Hauling away excavated soil and debris from the site
  • Excavator Kubota — Large-scale earth removal, digging trenches, and shaping the terrain
  • Leveling tools — Ensuring proper grades and levels for all patio sections and footings
  • Marking paint/stakes — Outlining excavation areas and marking proposed levels
  • Measuring tape — Checking dimensions, depths of excavation, and distances between features
  • Rakes — Spreading and leveling soil or base materials
  • Shovels — Fine-tuning excavation, clearing corners, and moving smaller amounts of soil
  • Sono tubes — Serving as concrete forms for footings for structures like a pergola
