This project is going to be amazing

What happens here

With the main base installed and compacted, the final grading and leveling of the crushed stone base are performed to precise specifications for each individual patio level (e.g., the platform right out of the back door, the kitchen area, and the lower-level dining space). This includes ensuring the exact slope for optimal drainage away from the house and any other critical areas. During this stage, all necessary preparations for integrated features are finalized. This includes accurately setting the Sono tubes (concrete forms) for the pergola footings to the correct height and ensuring any utility lines (like the yellow gas line) are properly stubbed up and protected in their designated areas. The base must be perfectly smooth and level (with appropriate drainage slopes) to prepare for the subsequent phase of laying pavers or other surface materials.

Goal: Achieve precise final grades and prepare all integrated features for the patio.

Tools and materials

  • Leveling tools — Verifying final grades, slopes, and elevations of each patio level
  • Measuring tape — Verifying dimensions, heights of footings, and distances between features
  • Rakes/Shovels — Fine-tuning the base layer, moving small amounts of aggregate to achieve precise grades
  • String line — Establishing straight lines and guiding final grading for consistent slopes
  • Wooden stakes — Marking and holding grade lines for precise leveling
