What happens here
This video provides step-by-step instructions on how to quickly peel, core, and slice apples using a 'Johnny Apple Peeler' tool, prepare them for dehydration, and then load and start a Nesco food dehydrator. It also offers tips for preventing browning if storing fresh apple slices. Note: A significant portion of the video (0:57-3:07) discusses apple cider vinegar fermentation, which is unrelated to the main topic of apple dehydration.

(11,367 characters)hey folks this is Josh Stoney Ridge farmer welcome to the farm vlog today we're gonna be having some fun here in the house today because there's snow about that deep outside and we really can't get out and do much of anything with the tractors or chainsaws or anything like that so we're gonna have some fun in the kitchen we're gonna be cutting slicing apples putting them in the food dehydrator so that they look like this and we're gonna be using a cool new tool that I got for my kitchen an awesome apple peeler slicer and corer it all works in one you just crank this little handle pretty cool so come along on the farm blog today we're gonna show you how we take this and turn it into this something that shelf-stable for a long long time you don't have to refrigerate it you'll want a good snack you get some dried apples good stuff let's have some fun [Music] well folks let's start this video out talking about what we have here behind us if you're new to the channel there'll be a link to the video right here we crushed apples and juiced apples and we made apple cider and this apple cider has been fermenting here on our countertop for I don't know I think we're at about 3 or 4 weeks right now some of its still working off we basically just took apple cider some of it's all natural no yeast added this has champagne yeast in it and this has apple cider yeast in it pretty cool stuff what the end result here will be is apple cider vinegar so we're trying to make our own apple cider vinegar it'll take about six to seven months to make it and I have a jar I've already finished apple cider vinegar here I want to show you a lot of stuff you can do with apples and apple cider vinegar is really good for you so this is finished apple cider vinegar beautiful and clear right on the top floating right there is what they call the mother and that's a very important part of apple cider vinegar and if you look down in the bottom you'll see a little chunk it looks like a disc down there well that little disc is one of the mothers that has fallen off so if I leave this alone for three four or five years it'll form mothers and the mothers will sink to the bottom and then another mother will form and it'll sink to the bottom so you'll have little discs all down in here and here's another one that's probably been sitting on top of the fridge for around six months or so and it's got a little cloudiness in there the mother has just fallen to the bottom in here and it has a little bit of sediment so after these kind of settle down and they start to clear up I'll pull all that apple cider vinegar to be it will be an apple wine until I take these lids off right here so I'll take what's called an airlock off of the top and it will allow the alcohol to evaporate right off of the wine and turn into vinegar and it takes a couple of months but it's well worth it to make your own apple cider vinegar I think so follow along on the farm blog if you're new go ahead and subscribe the channel and you can follow this whole journey of apple cider vinegar now let's get started cutting our apples up these are apples these are McIntosh apples a big fat juicy Delicious apple and I'm going to show you how all these tools work now some of these apples have a little bad spot like that guy right there don't worry about it we can cut out the bad spots after it slices I'll show you all right guys if you know me I'm a bit of a gadget guy and I had my doubts about this gadget so the way this works is this little apparatus peels this course and this slices and basically you just attach the Apple and drive it right through and it's super duper simple it works great and it's really easy so check it out so we're down here on the table basically we just flip up this little lever and it's suction cups it securely to the table and or countertop whatever you're using then we'll take our Apple stick them on there there we go just stab them right on in position right there and then we'll just start driving the apple with this little crank right here and you'll see it start to peel this just takes all the work out of peeling apples it's insane works quickly makes a bit of a mess if you don't have a pot down here okay now our apple is all done we just slide it right out in the core comes right out just like that boom easy breezy now your Apple is ready to go and I'll show you where we go from here but this is how its sliced up really really cool we're gonna set this in a little pan over here so we mash this little release slides out we stick an apple on there and I don't know if you guys remember grandpa peeling an apple see if you could peel an apple in one long straight string and I tell you what get your heart out grandpa this thing kicks butt awesome awesome awesome just keep cranking away faster you crank the better it does I think all right so let's slide this guy out we'll stick another apple on slide him on there and you can't do this with a really mushy Apple so it needs to be fairly firm I like to put them in the refrigerator or leave them outside in the cold for a little bit and we'll just start cranking away on it come on guy there we go crank crank crank it's like so Apple get scored then you just slide them right off take the core out rock and roll good to go Apple is peeled and sliced and I'll show you the rest of it here in just a second well we've got to work our way through all these apples just push the button slide it back put on another nice Apple just like so start cranking cleaned up your mess as you go so you don't make a huge mess and again guys this thing is called the Johnny apple peeler crank faster you crank them better it goes really cool nice like that pop your core out good to go that beautiful folks I'm just gonna get busy hammering away at this and once we get a good pile of apples I'll show you the next step pretty cool this just totally simplifies this peeling apples and cutting apples up so if you send your kids with lunch to go to school with or whatever and you want to peel apples and have a week's worth of apples and do it in less than five minutes then you can do it with this machine really really cool also having those dried Apple snacks is really good because the kids won't have to refrigerate them they can just snack on them anytime very cool nice healthy little snack apple a day right so we're not quite done yet with our apples we want to slice them into smaller pieces that we can consume and I'll show you how we do that and show you exactly what we do to get them ready for the dehydrator or to put them in the frigerator for snacks for your kids and for you you basically want to get rid of this peeling you don't want that in your dehydrator so we'll cut it off get rid of that peeling part right there I'll throw that to the chickens nothing goes to waste here on the farm and we'll get the peeling part off right here now you can put the peeling in a separate bin for you guys to snack on that'll be just fine and we might eat that one it looks nice and juicy so then we'll take right here on the line where we just cut and we'll cut this right in half just like so now when it's cut in half like that you can separate these guys into apple chips just like so and I'll show you how we put them in the food dehydrator I like to put the wider pieces the thicker pieces to the outside of the dehydrator tray and if I have some smaller pieces I like to put those in the inside just like so no real science to it you just want to get as many Apple pieces on there as you possibly can each tray will hold approximately two apples you could sprinkle a little bit of sugar on here if you wanted to or a little bit of cinnamon over top here it really makes the house smell good once you're done with your tray basically just want to take it off the stack stack it over here with the ones that are full and fill up another tray very very simple two apples per tray so if you've got an apple with a bad spot on it a rotten spot like that you just basically take your paring knife and shave it right off this is a Dexter brand paring knife these are the best knives I've ever found for working in my kitchen so far so I really think a lot of them they'll be links down below in the video description to all the goodies that we're using here in the video we're going to show you next the best way to store your apples in the refrigerator and keep them from turning brown so I like to prepare my apple slices just like so and you just basically break them apart and put them in your little food storage container and very very simply here this will keep the apples from changing colors because apples automatically will start turning brown pretty much immediately after you cut them up so we want to go ahead and fix these guys up and just take the teaspoon of citric acid or you can just use a teaspoon of lemon juice or you can just take some grapefruit and squish in there or a limit basically do that fill the container about 3/4 of the way full just like we're doing here slice up kind of spread them out a little bit then take your little food container and shake them up a little bit and get that lemon juice on those apples and you can use two teaspoons if you want to make some good and keeps them from turning brown folks if you enjoy this kind of content please be sure and pound that like button subscribe to the channel if you're not already subscribed and if you don't have backyard chickens if you don't have a compost setup I encourage you to go ahead and start composting set yourself up a composter in the backyard or on the back porch or if you're just not able to or you don't want to be a dirty hippie you don't have to compost but I think it's the right thing to do nothing goes to waste here on the farm it's a good way to live it's a clean way to live all right we're ready to put the lid on the dehydrator this is our nesco food dehydrator basically we just set the lid on there's a little dial on the top we'll go ahead and get it plugged in back here so there's a little chart on this side and a little chart on this side and it says 135 degrees for fruits and vegetables so we'll turn it up to 135 just like that we'll let these guys dry so we sliced up 18 apples in about 5 minutes got them in the food dehydrator and this is what your finished product is gonna look like we basically just store them in mason jars and make sure they're nice and dry and that's it you can eat these there's a little smash you can pack them for your kids for lunch nibble on them throughout the day and they'll keep you out of that salty nasty food that's bad for you because an apple a day keeps the doctor away right thanks a lot guys I appreciate you coming to the channel today pound that like button subscribe if you're not already subscribed click the little bell icon it'll notify you when I post a new video and we'll have some more fun just like this and if you're interested in getting one of these guys this again is called the Johnny Apple what is this the Johnny apple peeler really really cool little item cool little gift idea for somebody in the kitchen a gadget I never thought would have worked but holy cow it's super duper simplifies peeling and slicing apples thanks a lot guys we'll see you next time on the Stoney Ridge there is a time [Music]
