What happens here

This project involves extensive land clearing, excavation, and grading to resolve a significant water runoff and erosion issue in a residential backyard. It includes constructing a multi-tier retaining wall and a dry creek bed to manage stormwater, along with meticulous backfilling and compaction to create a stable, usable lawn area. Various heavy machinery, such as a compact track loader (skid steer) and an excavator with specialized attachments, are utilized to move and shape the earth and place large boulders.

all right guys we're going to do something really different and i'm actually going to show you the end of the job in the middle of the series and that's because more than a few of you guys on the last video called me out and said i didn't do a very good job of explaining what was going on with this project and so what i want to do is i want to show you what the problem is i want to show you the solutions we came up to and then in the rest of these videos i want to show you how we actually build those solutions so hopefully you guys i'll be able to get back to that education entertainment thing that you guys really like so what was going on with this project is you see that street up there it comes right down here and it dumps all the surface water straight through these guys yard now there's also a storm sewer inlet right there none of this was in place this is what we install and you're going to see this part of it on friday and this is the dry creek bed dang look at there's two of them i didn't even catch that before one two storm sewer inlets coming in now the problem my customer was having was there was no control there was no swale this water would come in this way and instead of running straight down to the sluice hole down there it created its own sluice hole right here right off the back of their patio and they did not have a yard so when we got the call they wanted a yard they didn't want to have the city's sluice hole in their backyard i mean we're talking about oil grease slime coming off straight up the top of the street plus all of the garbage and debris that was just floating right back down and through here and so we came up with a two-part solution part one to give them an actual backyard to level this out we built this retaining wall right here you're going to see us finish building this retaining wall today as well as breakdown right about there but then on friday's video we needed to switch gears and change over to controlling that drainage and if we look right here we've got a very dedicated drainage swale and if you look closely you can see it's humped up right here what we're trying to do with this is we're trying to keep capture all of this water that comes through this system and keep it right here and not migrate up and over and fall down in here and the reason i'm out here right now is because it's been raining for about six hours and you can see that we've got zero water in their backyard the solution that we came up with is working and so hopefully you guys you'll be able to pick this up and see what we're doing in the next we may have three videos out of this one we're doing and i'm gonna jump in here to tell you about this we're doing what we call a construction time lapse so when we're done with a series where we show you how we do everything we're gonna do one final video where we walk through everything from video one two three however many videos there may be and we put it all into one very concise video with no talking it's just all pure action so hopefully you guys will enjoy that process and hopefully this explains this job so let's get on to seeing how they end up putting it in place based one either [Music] all right so the day was having more problems comes on top of the problems it had earlier that am sorry that i didn't film because we were busy doing other things the fuel pump went out on it it that's why it kept stalling out on us and now the hydraulics are acting up on it so now alex is going to pull it up onto level ground and check the levels and we're just going to go from there yeah yeah so you know you got the two lines that kind of like in between there is your safe zone right or yeah so it's at the bottom of the safe zone but it's getting it looks like it's all wet under here here so yeah i need we need to whatever size bolt to pull because she's yeah legit dripping under here oh i believe free holies well it's just access to all the hydraulic lines that's through the center here but it's solid wet under here like we blew a line somewhere yeah here oh it's not i mean it looks like it's spraying under there somewhere somewhere okay watch your eyes uh probably put a pair of sunglasses on or something so don't squirt you in the eyes but if that would cause you to i think you'd see more oil though yeah but there's quite a bit it's you can't really tell where it's coming from there's drips coming from every single thing yeah because like it was just been spraying everywhere i don't know i can hold the light if you want to maybe wiggle some lines or something see well it's coming from above all that so you see it on that bolt there so it's coming from up top there and dripping down and it happens to be coming on all these fittings here got everything about half inch i guess how about a 10 millimeter no i'm not that easy i mean this is kind of limited but like i'm seeing 7 16 9 16. you know well you could do them like i don't think it's going to work you know and then how much does it pump through you know that's the only thing like like if it needs a certain amount of volume i don't know how they work man i know enough to live stuff along sometimes just so when you build the wall from the back side the operator that's in the excavator can't see how the boulders actually look as they're laying them out so building a retaining wall becomes a two-man operation well it's always a two-man operation in our company anyway the second guy is always there as a safety spotter but in the case when the excavator sits behind the wall and is setting it down he actually becomes the eyes of the operator so what zack's trying to do is trying to pick up the exact right positioning of that boulder as alex is laying it in and then after alex gets that boulder where zach thinks it should be alex will jump out and check to make sure it's where alex wants it to be because the final call is on the job foreman and that's alex's prop this is alex's job you'll notice alex in the back and what he's doing is he's checking the boulders to make sure that none of them wiggle none of our boulders are allowed to move at all you should be able to firmly grab them push on them and they should all be locked in place and the reason we do that is because if there's kids running and a family reunion going on and people are walking on the wall it just stays in place and nobody gets hurt in the backfield zone of the retaining wall we use all of the imported fill that we bring in and that way we know exactly what's going into the reinforcement zone of this retaining wall and the reason we do that is we know that the material that we import doesn't have any organic material in it and has to the right consistency that we look for to build a stable long lasting retaining wall everything that we excavate can be used either as a top dressing or outside of the reinforcement zone of the wall [Music] alex is doing micro thin lifts and using compression compaction for the final round up of the backfill zone he's got the weight in the front bucket and that helps just add more weight to the tracks and although the tracks are designed to float they don't float when you put in thin enough lifts they compact [Music] this is going to wrap up today's video but it doesn't wrap up the project in fact in the next video we're going to be installing a dry creek bed we're going to finish grade this site and we've got to install a drainage swirl to capture all of the runoff that's coming off from the street that goes right through the middle of this guy's yard and that's part part of the reason why we ended up building the retaining wall in the first place was to give him an actual yard i hope you guys have enjoyed this video let me know in the comments down below and hopefully we'll catch you on the next one you guys and smash that like button it goes a long way and i see you guys doing it and i see you commenting so thank you to all of you guys who are just helping the good old dirt monkey out with it out with the algorithm i'm still trying to figure out this whole youtube algorithm thing i'm not quite getting it personally but i do enjoy making the videos whether i figure out the algorithm or not and i hope you guys do too catch you later guys have a good one god bless go get em
