Super Simple Shop Workbench Build: Here's What You Need...and How To Make One! (Anyone Can Do It)

this is the precision operations jonathan okay such dad stuff this like weekend dad project it's time to make some work benches for the shop got some regular old plywood some two by fours and i'm gonna wedge it into my truck somehow but i'm not gonna use a tape measure to do this i'm gonna show you how you can do it and it's still gonna be square and a good table it's extremely easy to do but we are secure i only gotta go like two miles but you know just gotta it's not going anywhere just gotta say it and i gotta go drop some shirts off the post office escalade shirts flag shirts they're up on the website now unloading this plywood here and baylor's like i hate plywood i don't want to get splinters then when we get close to the ground he just drops it right on my toes you can see the teal paint my toenails are gone it's ruined what i'm gonna do is i'll make like a skinny bench out of this just split this in half yeah and then one will be the top and the other side will be cut up to be a shelf underneath so we got these old tires here they're going to be our sawhorse for the time being i'm just going to mark it up in the middle and zip it right down mark the center in the same spot on both sides and we'll use one of those that's relatively straight as a guide to just you know put a line on it and then real all right so this critical information here what you're going to want to do is you're going to want to take out your level and measure this piece of wood so we're just going to put this right here make sure it's nice on the edge and then we'll just put a mark where it is on both sides baylor's on interim film dude we'll see how he does by the way he's 16. so exactly just don't slide in his dms all right jailbait you don't want that by the way adrian is not here right now because he actually had to go do some secret squirrel stuff in preparation for some secret squirrel stuff in memphis so he will be there for a couple months the the secret scroll stuff is not happening in memphis but he has to go there to get ready for what it is anyways now we're gonna take our level measuring tape we're not using a measuring tape for any of this that's the challenge here we're gonna see how bad it comes out now you get your two by four yeah you get one that's just like a little like not bowed i mean that one is a little bit hey it don't matter i like this one we're gonna go on the outside of the line on both sides when you're making stuff the marker line if you you got to make sure you're measuring to the outside of the line or the inside of the line or to cut so now we got that one up yeah so how are we gonna change that to right there i don't know i mean i think we'll try to pick it up you'll probably drop it on my foot oh you're not gonna let that down though i had to stop and get some eye protection though but not as any eye protection pit viper eye protection wow are those pit vipers yes they are can i try those yes you can there you go wow oh man i'm like stapleton other safety glasses just that was totally not planned at all i literally just went out to grab these because we're going to cut some wood and then that turned into like a cringy i like that episode we'll get you some we can do that if you want some of these you can type in staples and 42 on the pit buffer website it really doesn't do me anything but you'll save some money so let's go cut some wood what's the big stall you got right there yeah big saw is that stapleton's auto works right there that'd be a cool name for like a brand or something i don't really know what i'm doing but we're gonna do it anyway we're just gonna send it because oh oh okay here we go that's how you cut a piece of wood right there that's a good piece of wood right there boy yeah and then all the dust goes in the middle and you can sweep it up that was totally bland that way so this side here is a little bit bigger which is what we wanted we want them to be smaller because it's gonna be the shelf underneath and what we're going to do is since this is the smooth side here we're going to put this face down you don't understand what's about to happen here it's pretty simple you just build it on top of it yep we're going to build a perimeter out of two by fours and then you build the legs up and you flip it over and uh boom you got a table so this is this is the hardest part because everything gets built off of this square here so even if my line is not that great it's it's fine cut twice measure never how about that yes that's how we do it in text that's how we do around here get this thing open here okay you just hold it right where it's gonna be nice and flush hold it there make sure it's kind of flush there the whole way you can inset it if you want to but i just do the whole perimeter because then it has a nice nice thick wall i think it looks nicer once you paint it it's a boat a little bit but whenever you screw it in it'll go flat so we'll just make a nice line right here to cut on the inside of the line i'll err on the side of making it a little bit shorter because then you can kind of split the difference in there and then fudge it but if it sticks out then it looks weird you know how weird it is to use this saw for what it's made to do i usually only cut aluminum with this thing and it's so loud and so violent that this i'm just like no big deal yeah it don't matter because that's all i know it's a deal it does now you take your wood now you take your wood and you stick it on the wood you stick it on the wood or not yeah well we'll actually have to flip it over to screw these down because we screwed in from the top so i got these uh deck screws and their torx head which i didn't want these because they were torx head but then it came with free complimentary torx bit that's that well i'm sold that and i couldn't find two and a half inch screws that didn't come in like a pack of a bazillion and i didn't need a busily and i only needed like a million get this lined up as close as i can screw this one in and then we have a fixed pivot point to tie the other side down too meanwhile like actual carpenters and stuff no no no you can't do that you have to measure this where's your square i'm not going to put too close to the edge because it'll split so we're going to move it inboard a little bit what i'm gonna do is we're gonna paint we're gonna paint this and i'll measure the top surface and go to like a metal supply place and get an eighth inch thick piece of steel sheared for the top and we'll countersink screws in it and put it on there and then it'll be a steel tabletop and i could even weld a peg to the bottom of it to ground a welder on that's how you do right there nail the center home it's good enough if it was bowed a little bit you could kind of go under there and then pull it out before you nail it but it's it's good so we're just gonna let it rip where's the middle i don't know doesn't matter [Music] okay now time for the other side so now you get your other piece of wood a piece of wood and you're gonna wanna line it up to the edge yeah perfect awesome see how easy this is we almost have a table we turned that piece of wood and those into this already already yeah it's only been like 10 minutes of actually working maybe now that everybody's gone we're actually getting stuff done mm-hmm and like they don't see me all day because i do all like my office work during the day and then i work at night when nobody's in here making noise see i like the screw bit once better because they don't do this yeah they're way more stable they don't miss the carpenters over there like where are we going like them torx ones they're good you just don't know what you're doing you're not using that diameter of the screw correctly hey now it's getting rigid oh look at that sturdiness no tape measure here boys here in texas you don't use tape measures leave eyes calibrated eyeball it comes complimentary with the calibrated elbow whenever you're supposed to torque things get up in there i'll do that so i know that the outside is that way on my mark building of this table has just been like a continuous clip that's how easy it is like we probably had one cut max because i want it to be like a nice oh so yeah i left it just just a little bit but watch this watch this that is some precision right there see that's why you don't measure stuff folks measure nuts cut once so that's how that happens fits perfect i'm serious like we don't even need screws for this and it didn't just force it apart either like look at the fit up on here it's like like that's not even that's like carpenter style right there just you know if you can make stuff out of metal you can make stuff out of wood boom alright perfectly lined up can i do it twice in a row well we're about to find out let's see all right place your bets drop a comment down right now what do you think what do you how i look at a tape measure in my head if it's not if it's not like a half or a quarter then i'm just like i mean i know what eights are but i don't count as like three eighths i just look at the spot on the thing and i don't know i use tape measures as like looking at stuff reference not a number in my head yeah i think that one's gonna fit good too don't mind that gap when screw goes in there it'll close it yeah it is this uh yeah it'll knock that in right quick this cut's not crooked this board is kind of gradual when it gets pulled in it'll pull in just fine we're gonna get our uh spaghetti the bugetti the bugetti i don't know cooper had his own line power drills pretty amazing i'm just gonna get them nailed down in the center first i'll stand it up to do the side ones so we can put a little bit of pressure on it and help it cinch in let's see that fitment this looks like a pretty sturdy table to me it's gonna be haters said it couldn't be done they did i talk to them i we need that once we get the legs on here it's gonna be uh it's gonna be exactly what we need so now i gotta figure out how high i wanna make the table and i'm gonna make it pretty high so i'm not hunched over working on stuff all the time like it'll honestly probably be a little higher than my truck bed tailgate here but you know we're not going to do what is that we're not going to measure how high it is we're just going to take you know what this uh we're going to take this piece of wood and we're going to draw a line on it yep and then we're going to use the same piece of wood to draw lines on all the other pieces of wood and then we'll have four of the same pieces of wood don't get the paint don't put the sharpie in the white paint suck it john i'll sign your shirt too if you don't cut it with it on there you just use it for reference and get rid of it and don't move the board almost looks like this side's gonna match up with that side too no that's a see that's a dead match i'm not like feel that is that flush or is that flush oh that's pretty flush yeah is this flush too now this one's a little this one's a little taller but i don't know well we got four legs now it i just went in there and i marked it i don't know why you marked the inside yeah i marked the inside of the leg not the outside so ain't it chief let's try this again try this again that's exactly what we need yeah see right here it's good now if we put it down here it's not good so what i'm saying is when it gets screwed together we'll just move it move the legs so they're we'll put it probably right there it's down too low then you can't fit anything under it so put it kind of nice in the middle then you can still put things like tools and stuff here and then you can still put other stuff underneath it we figured out a way to use that block of wood yeah the one i messed up he messed up it is now a template because you're probably thinking oh he's stumped now he's not going to be able to get them at the same height to make the the under shelf and that's where you're running as you step on the level oh we can just go just put that you know right there and then we'll just zip it home right here move the old temple to the other side zip it home there too so it's just against it on bulk and then it's going to be flat and then we got perfect shelf height how about that i don't know what i'm doing i'm just using common sense here makes sense as well there's a lot to be said for that this is really not complicated i'm doing that so i can show that this can be done without anybody helping you this that's the template here this is the only help i'm giving him i'm going to add two more down here but you don't need to see that yeah if it were up to me these videos would be 30 seconds long and i'd be like and then your girl would share it to you on pinterest or something yeah be like look at my amazing boyfriend you built me a table i'm pretty sure most girls like she was like oh my boyfriend built me a table and it's like this pile of garbage like here you go honey put this put this in your room it's better than uh oh dang look at this table you can fit so many broken parts on that bad boy how long have we been working on this thing for 30 minutes tall i know he was well the camera is off he's like i can't believe this is going this easily like have you ever have you ever built anything out of wood this easily it's just keeping your references good it's not it's not difficult if you don't overthink it like your reference for the top is the squareness of this piece and you go from there and you make all the legs the same with your same template [Music] we got this serial table built shelf screwed in it's uh about as sturdy as it could be for only being like two feet wide and this tall which is fine because it's going to be up against the wall anyway glass black is that enough it should be well we're not going to paint the top of yeah we're not going to paint the other side we're not going to be at the top of the top deck because it's going to get a piece of steel over it so we're just doing like the legs and stuff here i really like this black oil based paint yeah you want to try it give it a shot we're going to try it at first the front right in the most important spot right here yeah just let it rip oh yeah because it's glossy then you can wipe it off that's why i didn't pick white because when this gets dusty you just you know wipe it down it looks looks nice again so tomorrow i'm going to get some metal to put on the top of this table and we might make another table we might paint the wall we're gonna do something for sure what do you think we should do tomorrow all right nice yeah we got one tables good enough we'll finish this table and paint that wall because one it doesn't look very good just bare drywall too the white will reflect more light just like it did in cooper's garage and three it just
