What happens here
This project outlines methods for improving soil health and preventing erosion on cultivated land, focusing on the use of cover crops, hay, and wood chips. It demonstrates how to identify problem areas, remove unwanted organic matter that smothers new growth, and strategically apply organic materials to stabilize soil and enhance fertility, with principles directly applicable to raised bed gardening.

(11,358 characters)hey guys this Josh tiny red farmer welcome to the farm vlog today today we've got something cool happening it's been raining and look behind me see these little rows little rows of grass the grass is starting to come up awesome awesome stuff look around here guys see that rock there's a rock right there there's like eight gigantic rocks right here if you look back here behind me rocks rocks rocks everywhere rocks so what we've got to do here on the farm is let this new pasture go ahead and take hold and look at that grass that's so cool so I've got a little bit of wheat or rye mixed in with my grass and it's starting to all come up it's awesome all the way up through here all the way we've got 42 acres of new grass down we also have 42 acres of bare land so I'm going to take you around today talk to you a little bit about what's going on with this bare land Ryan equals washing washing equals fix it got to fix it quick so where we be able to hey the other day I've got some piles of hay I need to scoop them up so they don't kill the grass and we're gonna use that to fix the spots that are washing so come along with me I'm gonna have a little bit of fun alright [Music] new h-bomb so guys first things first while we're driving over here to the other side of the farm look at this mess oh my god so this used to be our farm Road right here and now it's trees and trash everywhere okay solve this mess all this land here that's behind me we're going to take back to feel and we're going to take it all the way down to the creek now the Forestry Service has some rules that we have to play by okay so we can't cut trees within 50 feet of the creek if we do that we could damage the watershed and we don't want to damage the watershed so we're doing what we're supposed to do in the meantime here's a big mess and there's a bee around me and they won't leave me alone dude go away there's a hole there's 200 acres here so the timber guys are getting some nice timber here we've got some pretty decent pine saw logs here which means a little more bling bling' a little more money in the pocket that we can use to put back into the land and fix all this mess which will happen soon let's go over to the pond real quick I'll show you what's going on at the pond not a good thing going on over to the pond thank you and show you first of all I can't tell you how impressed I am and how good a job these timber guys have done this garret logging has been great with me they've done an awesome job however the only way they could get the land cut over here across the pond which we're going to cut that we're going to take it back to field leaving some huge oaks and big beautiful trees and and take out the old scraggly fraggles this was all filled at one point and we're retaking it so don't hate me for cutting the trees but anyhow they've got to come across the pond dam right here and when they come across the pond dam what's it gonna do it's gonna spread the soil well it's smooth the soil and it looks great but we've got trees and brush and branches all in the pond which will eventually catch up on the pond pipe we've got to drain pipes for the pond what's got to happen here is after they get done cutting I've got to make an apparatus to reach out there or get a canoe and get out there and get those branches and toss them out of the pond and clean it all up I've got to do it so the map on doesn't overflow again this winter so guys if you follow me around on my journey of bailing - hey the other day you'll know that we have issues with a few things I've got to dial in the hay rake a little bit tighter so that all my hay is utilized so that when I run my baler over the hay it picks it all up that's an issue and I'll show you what we're gonna do here right behind me is an example of what the issue is big clumps of hay okay here's where big dummy Josh forgot to tie his hay bale so we're gonna take the pitchfork and we're going to get this stuff up we're gonna take it over and put it on the places that are washing it's a good thing it's not it's not a bad thing just got a little bit of work to do gonna get out here and do it got my mud boots on love my mud boots ain't good my boots so guys mrs. Stoney ridges at work today so this is kind of all on me if I don't get this hay up as you look underneath this hay you can see up underneath there is grass it's trying to die it's being smothered out by this hay so we need to get it up do what's right for the land just so you know this is what the hay looks like underneath it's kind of wet the goats will still eat this stuff we're gonna put it on places that are washing that need a little bit of attention I'm gonna get busy so guys and gals just so you know if I don't get this up it's just as bad as having rocks laying around on the farm it'll clog up the baler it'll mess up the baler it'll mess up the cutter so I've got to get it up do I want to get it up no not really but you know what this is good honest work that's what farming is all about could you imagine back in the day when they had to get this stuff up by hand when they had to cut it by hand they didn't have machinery and they piled it up so we take a trip up to Amish country probably twice a year so stick around on the vlog we're gonna take it to Amish country and talk to those guys a little bit we stay on a farm stay most of the time we go up it'll either be a cattle farm or a chicken farm so up there in Amish country they still use this method they still pick it up by hand gosh that's can you imagine what a long day it would be to cut a 25-acre field you can see it didn't take long to pile that up on the Gator we're going to take the Gator over we're gonna pile this stuff up over some spots that are starting to wash and they're only starting to wash about this much I'll show you but this little bitty wash spot goes from that to this overnight when you have a big storm so we better get on it you don't it early stop it from washing something else I thought was pretty cool the ass one guys that are trimming the power lines I talked to him stopped and talked to him and they're putting their shavings over here all their chips their wood chips and we'll use that to stop washing areas also then add more biomass to our soil so what I see here that you don't see is that there's an area of washing I'm gonna take the camera off and we'll take you over here and show you you know what being on a farm when it gets wet it poses a serious serious problem with maneuverability I cannot drive on this I can't drive the Gator run I can't run a wheelbarrow across it and I've got to wear my mud boots I'll show you those mud boots real quick guys you got to have a good quality set of mud boots if you're on the farm if you're working outdoors if you're hunting or whatever these mud boots that I've got our super awesome I'll show them to you I'll post you a little link down below they're a great great boot I've had them for three years and had no issues my feet stay warm and they stay cool and I'm one of those guys whose feet sweat all the time well let's go over here and I'll show you just how muddy it is and it's only rained for like yeah twelve hours or so something like that not a heavy rain but I'm getting washing issues let's go see it so here are the boots that I have guys they're made by a lacrosse and I take and I roll this down when it's hot weather so I can keep my calves nice and cool but I've really got to have their lacrosse 800 model I think I've really got to have mud boots because look I mean seriously guys it's that bad and here's my little wash area and I better get it under control as you can see it's gonna get bad I knew I was gonna have a problem with washing I knew I would have a problem I knew I was going to have to fix it and that's why we've got the hay bales so that we can do this if it continues to happen I'll take an entire Bale and I'll just roll it off down the hill right in the wash area and that'll catch all that soil and build soil and build biomass and help to keep it from washing anymore so let's get out here and spread that nag on hay so when I put this hay on here I want to put it on kind of thick and I want to start in the upper area where its first started to wash okay so I can stop it you need to slow the water down the momentum of the water is what causes everything do you like how I use my gut to hold this it's pretty rad this is a good third hand if you ever need it you got it watch boom boom so we've just about got load number one now I'll probably have about ten loads of this to do it's gonna take me a pride to and a half hours or so but it's good work it's a good time it's warm out here kept my shirt off get a little bit of suntan but you're not going to see that because it's not very pretty all right so guys you're learning a little bit of something about what's the lesser romantic part of farming okay let's teach you a little bit about eggs let's teach you a little bit about chickens real quick these are marigolds I make sure that I plant marigolds all around my chicken coop and I plant a row or two of marigolds in the garden reason I do this is because marigolds help keep pests away and also it makes the chickens egg yolk a wild chicken it makes a chicken's egg yolk a bright bright orange and a very delicious egg so bring yourself some marigolds around your chicken coop give them some treats every day they'll appreciate you I just spied something really really cool over here by the honey bees check this guy out he's really smart he's over here by the honey bees and he's taking advantage of the honey bee situation watch look at that monster he's eating the honey bees as they come back so I think we call that a typical garden spider and he's eating the honeybees as they come back in well tert eating my bees part of nature gotta let it go well guys I hope you guys I hope I didn't de romanticize farming for you today basically today we're just moving grass I got a newfound respect for our forefathers that had to move grass with pitchforks and cut it by hand I even cut it by hand and I moved it by pitchfork been doing it for a few hours and it's a lot of work so me an old buh-buh here's my buddy we're doing good we had a good day out here on the farm I've been sweating our butts off just good honest work guys so I hope I didn't take the romance out of farm but we got to stop this mud from flowing down the hill all right that's it for the vlog today guys thanks a lot for watching I'll put a link down here
