What happens here

This project demonstrates the efficient seeding of large land areas using a no-till seed drill for establishing new pastures or hay fields. It covers understanding the equipment, selecting appropriate seeds like endophyte-free fescue and nitrogen-fixing clover, determining optimal seed rates, and the mechanical process of planting. The goal is to create high-quality, weed-resistant pastures suitable for livestock and hay production, emphasizing the benefits of precision planting for uniform growth.

hey guys it's Josh welcome to the farm vlog this morning what we're doing today is we're seating this is called a no-till seed drill and basically we have a bunch of grass seed that we're putting down we have about 60 bags of fescue my garage is a disaster but I'll show you the palette of bags here that is a pallet of grass seed that's $3,500 worth of grass seed okay so we're going to be putting that down we're going to use the no-till drill here this is a local farmers drill he rents it out for 15 dollars an acre and basically I'm gonna take you over here show you how it works and show you in action we're putting down grass seed we're putting down a little bit of clover and we're gonna throw in some wheat with it too so we get a good bite when we plant our grass so come on with me today when we take the tractor no-till drill and we're going to start drilling down some seed also I have hay on the ground over on the other side of the farm we're gonna bail that up too that'll be in a future vlog so we've got to get the hay off the ground we've got to get this done it's such a busy time so come on along when we show you how this thing works [Music] [Laughter] it looks pretty busy down there doesn't it so we're gonna go on up top here there's like a step we raised the hopper yeah right here is where you put your grass seed goes down into this hopper and then comes out through these little tubes right here and drops it in now I'll explain more of that later and here's how you choose your settings for whatever you're going to see there's a hopper for the finger smashing there's a hopper here and that's for grass seed fescue this is for your wheat and grain and this is for your clover we're gonna put a little bit of clover in with the mix so let me show you how these discs work on the no-till drill basically this disc right here cuts the ground it opens a little slit and then the seed drops in via these tubes right here and these tubes drop a seed in at a certain prescribed rate and these two discs together spread the soil and then after they spread the soil this wheel comes down and compresses it back down and that's the no-till drill actually no-till is till you are tilling a tiny little spot dropping a seat in and REE compacting it back down really cool it'll make the seed go down very nicely it'll make everything look good and we'll have little rows of grass seed as it starts to come up awesome stuff will show you progress as all this goes on as the grass starts coming up and everything today I got to bust my butt get this done by the afternoon so I can go rake hay and bale hay by the way if you caught the little video yesterday down here's a guy on the tractor he's doing the disking and dragging today while I do the drilling so it's just a team effort here we've got three guys going at it working hard not three guys going at it we got three guys working really hard trying to get all this stuff done and basically we want to get it done by October so we can get that winter rain in this is the best time to put grass seed down this is the most opportune time to get all this done and we're so lucky we've had good dry weather so let's get on the tractor and get busy I so wish I could show you guys some drunk footage but I can't I crashed a drone about two days ago and some trees I was programming it to follow the tractor and it'll it'll program it to circle and it went to circle and it just banged up into the trees and I had to send it into the factory to have it fixed let's talk a little bit about the grass seed that I'm using guys I'm using a k32 this is Kentucky 32 grass okay it's an IND of fight free grass okay and into fight is the type of fungus that grows in grass that can make cows get colicky or sick so that's what we're planning here because we're planning on this being pasture land or cutting it for hay next thing we can talk about is clover okay so here is our Ladino clover this is also what we're planting will put the clover in the clover hopper and we'll seed it fairly lightly throughout the field the clover will help to fix nitrogen to the soil and provide a better quality soil over the years now some folks that mohei don't like clover in their hay because it takes a long time for clover to dry it basically holds a lot of moisture we want it because we're establishing pasture if at some point we want to go over this with a broadleaf weed killer which may happen because after you clear all this land let me show you after you clear all this land oh this is what I'm seating after you clear this amount of land you're gonna have a lot of weeds now for the first two years or so we'll just mow him down mown down mow him down to provide biomass here in the soil and in subsequent years our goal will be to eliminate weeds to eliminate anything that's not good pure fescue and clover okay most of the time when you just mow that takes care of it that gets rid of the weeds you mow before the weed seed out and most of your weeds are not a perennial meaning they don't come back year after year like the grass this k32 fescue is very invasive okay meaning that it will push out bad weeds it will push out other undesirables which is good it's very invasive it grows very vigorously and that's what we'll be bailing for hay in the next vlog or so so the goal here is to have a good high quality hay and a good high quality pasture I've got some work to do I'm already late I need to get busy and get my stuff done here guys so we got to talk about seed rates okay the thing to do here is 40 pounds per acre is what the recommend it is I'm gonna do it a little bit light I'm gonna go 30 pounds per acre because I already have a little sod on this field we're going to get our hoppers all set up we're going to put a little bit clover in there and we're gonna get rolling rocking and rolling with this so I'll take you up here we'll show you the bins I'm just gonna take my knife for my grass seed in I know what you're thinking man Josh you could save those bags and use them for something well I've got plenty of bags I need to get busy all right we're all packed full of fescue I'm going to pour a little bit of clover in here for the sake of safety I'm not gonna have the camera up here pouring the clover in and I'll tell you why when I say it's for the sake of safety it's for the safety of this clover this one bag of clover is 225 dollars okay clover is very pricey fescue seeds costing me 68 or $67 per bag this is not your typical k31 Kentucky 31 that you get it like tractor supply or Lowe's or wherever this is a specialty grass for grazing cattle and making hay just in case you're curious system what the clover looks like this is what it looks like it's a really fine seed here and it's inoculated to prevent disease let's get busy let's do some seed plant so if you want a little piece of farm drum I'll tell you what just happened the ass blonde guys are down here trimming on the power lines once again we're cutting timber and I told them just leave this one section alone well I've been over there mowing hay and they came right over and ran all over my freshly mown hay we just had a conversation just want to let you know I can't win just can't win let's get busy get this done [Music] [Applause] so you guys might be wondering what else I'm putting with my grass seed this is the area in front of the house and it's really on a steep slope and I'm putting oats winter wheat and there's a little bit of soybean mixed in with that I got it from a local farmer here not certified seed just seed to throw down to hopefully take really really quick that stuff should start sprouting in like one or two days so guys I am totally totally bushed I've been bouncing on this tractor for hours now let's look at the our meter along here there's an there's a meter on here that tells you how many acres you've done let's see here so the way this thing works guys is we pay by the acre it's 15 dollars an acre so we didn't seed that much we didn't see it as much as I thought we had we got a little bit more to go I'd say another five acres or so I'm gonna get busy get it done before Sun Goes Down Suns starting to creep down over here so got a lot of work ahead of us guys we put this down and we'll pray for a light rain we need about three days of drizzle slow drizzle this is the right time of year so hopefully all this fescue will take we'll have a big beautiful pasture here out in front of our house pretty awesome and a beautiful woman behind it and a beautiful one over there they're beautiful ones everywhere pretty cool lots of hard work guys wiped out covered with dust long day in the saddle thanks for watching click that like button guys don't forget to click that little bell down there if you haven't already done it and it'll notify you when I post a new video thanks ringing Wow [Music] Pierce we've had some ways those Denise
